  • Family-orientated campsite on the river Roden in rural Shropshire
  • A 10-minute drive from Wem; Shrewsbury 25 minutes
  • Farm site with excellent stargazing; campfires welcome
Thistleford Camping is a family-orientated campsite near the hamlet of Aston in rural Shropshire. Set on the edge of a farm, this site is great for families looking to introduce kids to the great outdoors and those looking to unwind in an all-natural setting. The site is divided into a handful of dells that are strung along the riverbank, with part of a small woodland also included. Guests are welcome to bring their own canoes and get out exploring on the water. Fishing is also allowed too, but please release whatever you catch after snapping a photo or two. Thistleford Camping is in a peaceful location with very little light pollution, so on clear nights some amazing star-filled skies are visible here. (That also means it can get very dark, so a torch should be high on your packing list). The main field is very spacious, with plenty of room for a game of cricket or rounders. Away from the pitches, there is a circular walk that takes you along the edge of the forest to Woods End, an excellent spot for a picnic. Campfires and barbecues are allowed if raised off the ground. Firewood is sold on site and special burners are available to hire if you're looking to keep large groups warm on chilly evenings. For food supplies and places to eat out, look to Wem, a small spot 10 minutes' drive away.

The Dell primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Superb setting for a relaxing break. Great walks for the dog, river for those that fish or canoe. Camp keeper John was always on hand to help.

The Dell primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely setting along the river. The stars were incredible at night. Its close to Wem if you need bits and pieces. Farmer John is just a perfect host, friendly and great company and nothing is too much bother. We camped with a 1 year old a 5 year old and a dog and it was perfect.

As close to heaven as you can be.....!

The Dell primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Oh my word, we found a true slice of paradise right here! From the moment we arrived we loved it! John met us and showed us a pitch across from the main field where we could camp by ourselves, though the main field had just a few other campers there already. We decided to have the use of the hot tub during our stay, and John worked tirelessly to clean it, fill it with fresh water and prep it with firewood for our stay.
John and his wife Jan are kind and welcoming and it's obvious that they care about their guests because the whole site is immaculate and well maintained, as well as being in one of the most beautiful locations ever.
John checks in with his campers morning and afternoon on his quad bike and goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is happy. He even towed the large boat to a place where it was safe for us to enter and leave the river.
There are no electric points or showers but this just meant that watching the stars was made even more beautiful.
Out of everywhere we have stayed in our van, this is our firm favourite now.
Truly awesome place.

Disliked We have no dislikes about this place. Everything was absolutely perfect and we will be back again soon!

The Dell primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great campsite this, one of the best. Quiet and peaceful, edged by a narrow stretch of river. No showers but spotlessly clean composting toilets and a place for washing up (not drinking water). Hot tub if you want to use it, two man canoe free to use if you want to give it a go. John, the campsite owner, was very friendly and came down every evening to get everyone's fire pit going for them. Loads of places for kids to play or explore. Would definitely recommend, will definitely be back.

The Dell primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Location was peaceful and very beautiful. Loved the simplicity, we have a camper and can survive with no electric hook up.
Be aware there is a naturally powered hot tub and composting toilets but that’s it…it’s about being with nature.
Great location for star gazing on a clear night.
Warm welcome by John, will be back.

The Dell primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked What's not to like, lovely clean
campsite, pitch where you want, have a campfire, walk in the woods, hire a woodburning jacuzzi, free use of a canoe along the river, rope swings in the trees and farmer John on his quad. Spent a lovely night at thistleford camping and will definitely be back soon.
