General

  • Family-orientated campsite on the river Roden in rural Shropshire
  • A 10-minute drive from Wem; Shrewsbury 25 minutes
  • Farm site with excellent stargazing; campfires welcome

Thistleford campsite is an idyllic, tranquil spot in the Shropshire countryside on the edge of our farm, perfect for families to give their children a back to nature experience and parents the chance to unwind from the hectic schedule of modern life. Being in nature, reduces anger, fear and stress and increases feelings of wellbeing. The Dell offers this space to reconnect with our children, families and loved ones. Even one night away under the stars can rejuvenate. The campsite is divided into 'Dells' along the banks of the river Roden and our small wood called The Ells. Families are invited to bring their own canoes to explore the river. Fishing is also permitted but we practice a catch and release policy only.
There is very little light pollution so on a clear night it offers some amazing star filled skies. To maintain this there is very limited lighting provided so a good torch is essential. The main field offers spacious pitches that allows plenty of room for friends and families to pitch together and still have room for a game of cricket or rounders.
Campfires and barbeques are allowed if raised off the ground. We supply firewood at a charge and have some unique burners that are perfect for keeping large groups warm on chilly evenings.
The composting toilets are clean, smell free and avoid the use of nasty chemicals. With plenty of saw dust from our saw mill, we can offer campers the chance to bring their own composting toilet. However, we do not cater for chemical toilets. There is a hard standing area with a picnic bench perfect for barbequing by the river.
From the main 'Dell' a bridge takes you to 'Spring Dell'. There is a large rope swing and a natural spring that supplies the campsite with water for washing and washing up. Drinking water is supplied fresh from the farm bore hole daily.
There is an abundance of wildlife for the keen spotters and Kingfishers are a common sight. There is a circular walk that takes you along the edge of the wood following the river to Woods End, perfect for a picnic away from the main camping field. The path then takes you back up through the woods and down to 'Spring Dell'. Or you can climb Thistleford Hill behind the wood for the perfect view of the sunset.
Nearest shops and amenities are located in Wem about a ten minute drive away.

Beautiful site, very peaceful and liked the simplicity of the facilities. We knew it would be basic but the set up is well thought out and we loved being able to connect with nature so easily. The rope swing, river and woodland walk were real highlights!

Just a wonderful place to stay. The family who own and run the site are friendly and attentive. We rocked up and spent the weekend at Thistleford, exploring and enjoying the surroundings. Logs and burner were great for roasting marshmallows- we will be going back

We had the best time!! The site is so beautiful - woodland, a meandering river, rope swings, walks, wildlife, a sumptuous hot tub and fire bowl to toast marshmallows - couldn't be better. Hosts gave us the warmest welcome - all of the pre-visit info was spot on and we have re-booked already 😊

It was absolutely wonderful! The best camp we have had this year. The owner was hospitable, friendly and could not do enough for us. He fetched us water and wood both days. The sight is gorgeous and the little boats and swing for the children was just perfect. The view by the river and the location near Shrewsbury was excellent. My husband came by train later on and the station was only 3 miles away. Dont let the idea of compost toilets put you off ( these are not festival toilets) as they are spotlessly clean , wooden and had lots of hygiene features. The hot tub and chalet in the next field looked lovely too .. we will be back next year.

Hidden gem, amazing find. Alex & Dani are wonderful hosts who cant do enough for you. Great for the kids too. The site also has a couple of rope swings and a canoe that can be used up and down the windy river.

This site has become a favourite of ours and we have been back since.
