Great Family Holidays Since 1974: the Shingler family welcomes you to Lower Lacon Caravan Park
Play area by orange area and top field
Children can play for hours and make lots of new friends
Play park by one of the camping fields

  • Family site one mile from the market town of Wem
  • Within 25 minutes' drive of Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch
  • Two play areas, crazy golf and a supermarket with off-licence on site
Opened by the Shingler family in 1974, Lower Lacon Caravan Park is just a mile from the stunning market town of Wem in north Shropshire. With train and bus services in Wem being within walking distance, the site has easy access to plenty of local attractions, including Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch (which are all within 25 minutes' drive of the site if you'd rather take your own transport). The site has a very convenient and secure set-up, with a barrier system, 24-hour emergency cover and a warden and owners living on site. There are two play areas on site, as well as crazy golf and a heated outdoor swimming pool with a toddler's paddling pool (please take note that the pools are only open during high season for pre-booked sessions only, and weather dependent). For extra entertainment, the J.A.K.K.S. Barn (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) has a bar and occasional family discos. When you're hungry, pick up snacks at the on-site supermarket, which also has an off-licence. The J.A.K.K.S. café and takeaway (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) are on hand for further refreshments. By the pool, there's the choice of CJ's Snack Bar (weather dependent) and the adults-only Windmill Lounge Bar (only open during high season or on weekends during low season and winter), which has a marquee. Lower Lacon Caravan Park has a pretty cool backstory, having started as the back entrance for the Aston Park American Army Camp, a munitions and distribution depot built in World War II (on land purchased from owner Clive's paternal grandfather). During its development, a D8 bulldozer sank in the soil, so the land was covered with three feet of solid materials from local foundries; this can make placing pegs difficult but it also means that the team have never had to turn away any customers due to bad weather as the pitches stay firm.

What customers say

This is a well-maintained, friendly, and spacious campground with lots of family activities, including a clean outdoor pool, play areas, and on-site entertainment. Guests praise the generous pitches, clean facilities, and helpful staff. However, some visitors note outdated washrooms, occasional noise from other campers, and that the site isn't entirely dog-friendly due to restrictions.

Liked Onsite entertainment everything was clean and friendly staff the club house was great as well

Disliked Not much to do in the town centre difficult to get food after 3pm but this has nothing to do with the campsite as they have a cafe and food was available

Primitive grass campsite (no pets, small)

Liked Location was great, amenities at the site were good. On site shop sold lots of things that we needed.
On site cafe (although did not use) was perfect for takeaway options and option to use club house was also great.
Drinking walking very close to site.
Very friendly staff, even helping find your pitch.

Disliked Very busy site, which unfortunately meant some people left the toilets in a bit of a mess; soiled underpants in the gents, and sick all over the porta-loos. Nothing to do with the site itself as it was otherwise generally clean.

Fair old trek to the toilets if your on the furthest away camping field, and washing up station.

As it was busy, children, dogs and people running all over the place, which made very difficult to drive through. Potentially needs some kind of footpath for pedestrians?

Powered grass campsite (large, no pets)

Liked Close enough to everything really apart from swimming pool but weather was nice so didn’t mind the walk down, close to the showers, toilets, play area, evening entertainment and cafe which was really good.

Powered grass campsite (small)

Liked Nice spacious pitches, friendly staff, pool was nice and clean, albeit a bit cold. Clean toilets and showers.

Disliked Bar drinks were poor (no decent draft beer), no ball games in pool and have to prebook, a bit needlessly strict given it wasn’t busy

Powered grass campsite (XL)

Liked This site has a lot to offer from a takeaway, cafe, bar, outdoor pool, kids park and on site shop so there was plenty for us to do. The toilet and shower blocks were clean.

Disliked Our pitch was very hard ground, a few inches of grass on top of rubble which was really tough to get our pegs in

Liked Site was pretty clean. Toilets were always clean. Lots of play areas. Polite staff.

Disliked Some people were noisy until midnight. Drunken noise!

Only one washing up area which was quite far away from our pitch.

Local attractions

Shropshire is a pretty peaceful place without too many crowds most of the time, so grab your chance to get stuck into a few gentle activities like floating on the Shropshire Union Canal, river Severn or Llangollen canal (50 minutes' drive). The site is also within striking distance of Ironbridge Gorge (45 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adore exploring the history of a place? Take yourself to spots like the British Ironwork Centre (35 minutes), Blists Hill Victorian Town (40 minutes) and Royal Air Force Museum Midlands (40 minutes), or pretend like you've gone back in time at Attingham Park (25 minutes), a National Trust site. The Quarry (half an hour) is a gorgeous spot for a little stroll in Shrewsbury, and if you fancy something a bit more challenging, Hawkstone Park Follies (five minutes) has sandstone hills and caves. If you're looking for activities that'll entertain the kids, however, make a beeline for Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World (35 minutes). The site is near plenty of historic Shropshire towns and villages, from Hodnet (10 minutes) and Ellesmere (20 minutes) to Market Drayton (20 minutes) and Oswestry (40 minutes).
