  • Small and friendly adults-only site 10 minutes' drive from Shrewsbury
  • A 15-minute drive to Wroxeter Roman City; Ironbridge half an hour
  • Five-acre site with a bar and shop; shared kitchen; dedicated dog walk
Heritage hunters, serenity seekers, walkers, wildlife watchers and fans of all things Roman (and wine) … cart yourself off to this small, peaceful and secluded Shropshire site for all the above and a fair bit more, at a friendly rural base less than ten minutes' drive from the medieval market town and 600+ listed buildings of Shrewsbury. As well as its locale five miles from the Shropshire capital, Cartref Camping and Caravan Site is also half an hour's drive from the famed industrial setting and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge, and a short drive from Wroxeter Roman City and its adjoining Roman vineyard. It's set in the Shropshire Hills where several walks and bike rides are easily reached, such as Offa's Dyke Path passing between Shrewsbury and nearby Welshpool; the Marches Way, also passing Shrewsbury on its way from Cheddar to Chepstow, and lake-based wanders around the glacial waters of Ellesmere. The amiable Cartref owners have named the site after the Welsh word for 'home', as the mission on site is for everyone to feel relaxed and comfy, whether they're Crusoe-style campers or out on their first trip with a new tent or caravan. Pitches have a cosy, private feeling as they're marked out with hedgerows. Within the site's five-acre field is a dedicated dog walk, and there's also a small bar selling local ales, Wrexham lager and Shropshire gin along with wines and other spirits. The immaculate amenities include a toilet and shower block with access for disabled guests, a washing-up area and a laundry. Cartfef also has a shop and communal kitchen.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Very well tended site. Large level pitches with hook up and stand tap. Very quiet. Pleasant staff. Bar area was good. Toilet & shower block very clean and well presented. Not too large and static park segregated with separate entrance. Adults only good for peace and quiet although very early season anyway.

Disliked Fairly long walk to nearest outside amenities. Limited bar opening time, shop not open and no bar food available because of early season midweek stay. Had to go out for supplies. They could make more effort early season because of location. Although, we used well within the hook allocation of electricity the QR code internet thing where you had to give your bank account details so you could be surcharged was a bit of a faff. Had to pay £2 extra for my daughter to make a brief visit

Liked Great staff onsite! Shout out to Dave who went above and beyond!!

Disliked Dogs dogs and more dogs! I don"t dislike dogs but there is a time and a place and its not in the bar when your eating and there are about eight dogs barking at each other which is not very relaxing!!

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Nice and quiet with lovely landscaping. The facilities were spotless and the staff lovely and helpful. Also loved the off lead secure dog field for my pooch.

Disliked If a could score 9.9 I would as its only a minor point. You have to scan a QR code to switch on the electric and add your card details to pay over your alloted amount. I understand why sites are doing this with the rising costs of utilities. It's only that it was a bit if a pain as my phone reception wasn't great and wifi kept dropping out. Having said that once up and running it was fine and it only ended up being an extra £1.80 over the weekend and we used heating etc as normal.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Level spacious pitch, immaculate shower block and a friendly on site bar and food van. We visited over the last week of February after weeks of rain and the grounds were immaculately kept, so I can only imagine how lovely the site will be in the summer months. We were booked in by Rachael who personally took us to our pitch and from then on we saw her manning the shop, working behind the bar and even cleaning the shower block. She always had a smile and a friendly word for the guests and she is a real credit to the site.
I have scored a 9 out of 10 because nothing is perfect but this place comes close.
Had a great stay and hope to go again.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked We booked this site as my brother and his partner were coming up from Wales and us from Manchester, this was half way for us both. We've had a great weekend. It was an adult only site which was perfect. The grounds are beautiful and well cared for. The toilets and showers are spotlessly clean. The pitches were great, good space to park the van, very flat, and a grassed area to sit out on. We were greeted on arrival, and shown around. There is a bar which we didnt use on the first night but we couldn't here it from our pitch so we had a peaceful night. The second day my brother and his girlfriend turned up and we took the dogs on the good sized field before heading to the bar. It got busier after we arrived but the staff were not phased and the service was great, the staff and management were lovely. Food was fantastic and so was the entertainment. The other people staying on the site were friendly too with people joining strangers on tables and becoming friends. I mean it does help when your brothers got a bernese mountain dog. He's enough to start a convo. We left the bar at 7.30pm back onto a quiet site for a peaceful night's sleep. One of the best things for us is it was dog friendly so our dogs were with us all the time and never locked in the van. I would definitely recommend this site.

Local attractions

Shropshire's splendid capital of Shrewsbury is around five miles from Cartref Camping and Caravan Site. The piles of old buildings to see will keep anyone occupied for quite some time, but ask around when you're there to see if any of the famed festivals are running during your stay: the Shrewsbury Flower Show, Folk Festival and the Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival and more have their HQs here. Roam a little further to Wroxeter Roman City, five miles south-east of Shrewsbury: once one of the biggest cities in Roman Britain, it's managed these days by English Heritage, which runs regular events, an audio tour and a museum around its bathhouse remains, townhouse re-creation and the biggest free-standing Roman wall in the country in the Old Work. Guided tours, afternoon teas and wines are available at Wroxeter Roman Vineyard. The Industrial Revolution site of Ironbridge half an hour's drive away is another top Shropshire attraction, or you could sample some fine dining or afternoon teas in the foodie town of Ludlow. Ellesmere, with its glacial meres created during the last Ice Age, also has a bowling green at the ruins of its 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle.
