  • Spacious pitches on a Shropshire farm a 15-minute drive from Oswestry
  • Shropshire Sculpture Park five minutes’ drive; Telford 40 minutes
  • Family- and dog-friendly site; pub and buses within a 20-minute walk
In rural Shropshire, 15 minutes’ drive from Oswestry, Red Oak Camping is a welcoming site on a family-run working cattle farm; the presence of resident animals at some sites often means that you can’t bring dogs, but happily that is not the case here, where your well-behaved four-legged companion will be a welcome guest (though bear in mind that there is an extra charge). There are assorted accommodation options here, and what unifies them all is the feeling of spaciousness and the utterly peaceful vibe – give or take the occasional lowing from the cows… Guests also benefit from such amenities as a toilet and shower block, an outdoor washing-up area and ice-pack freezing, as well as recycling points, chemical waste disposal and charging facilities for electric cars. Mind you, you might not need to recharge your car until the day you leave, since it only takes 20 minutes on foot to reach the village of West Felton, from where a bus service links to places such as Oswestry, Shrewsbury (25 minutes) and Telford (40 minutes). West Felton also has a pub serving food – that’s if you don’t fancy firing up the barbecue for dinner – and there’s another pub within a half-hour walk (or five minutes’ drive), on the Montgomery Canal, which runs through Shropshire and Powys and is a pretty spot for a post-lunch walk.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Facilities were all up to date and clean. The pitches were all level and well kept. There was WiFi. kitchen area had microwave, kettle, cooker, washer, fridge freezer. Everything you need. The girl who checked us in was super friendly and provided a leaflet with helpful info for the surrounding area. Raised bbqs and firepits allowed. It was a nice quiet area and we got a good night's sleep. And the owner popped round all the tents in the morning to check in us all which was a nice personal touch. Great little campsite and good value. Recommend the navigation inn over the fields and down the Montgomery canal. And ty mwar park and viaduct. Had a great weekend. Thanks! 😊

FHU cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked We loved everything !
The kitchen, showers and toilet block were brand new and very clean and tidy.
The fully serviced gravel pitch was pretty level (we did need ramps).
The pitches were quiet and spacious and we had a great view of open countryside.
There was an easy circular walk with our dog along the Montgomery canal.
Emma, the owner, was a great communicator and it was good to meet the Red Oak team during our stay.

Disliked Only minor dislike was it cost £5 per dog per stay and as we stayed just one night we thought that was expensive.

Definitely worth camping at this site, either motor home or tent.

FHU cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked The peace and quiet, even though there were children camping, they were so well behaved as they had plenty of room to play football. We enjoyed watching them enjoy outdoors playtime.
The amenities are spotless. The showers are a good size, plenty of room to dry off after a lovely hot shower.
There are 2 full size well equipped kitchens on site, much nicer than washing up in the outside areas so typical at other sites.
The hosts and their family are so welcoming and friendly and make sure everything goes smoothly for your break.
This is only their second season and we wish them all the best for the future.
Thank you Rebecca and family xx

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We enjoyed our stay at Red Oak Camping and would definitely consider booking again.

The owners are very friendly and came around each day to check everything was okay.

Facilities are brand new and generally always clean. Very handy having a kitchen as it was quite windy when we were there making it difficult to use our camping stove at times.

On first impression I wasn’t sure if there would be enough toilets/showers as there were only 2 of each in the block, however, we didn’t have to queue once and we visited on a bank holiday weekend.

After chatting with the owner he informed me of another hut by reception with more facilities and they are also expanded to add even more.

Showers are electric powered, always hot and amazing pressure. Also a bonus not having to press a button every 30 seconds for a bit of water!

Surrounded by a quiet village but there is a supermarket about a 5/10 minute drive away and a couple of pubs.

Good as a base for those who want to explore the local area or those just looking for a bit of peace and quiet!

WiFi available but didn’t quite reach where we were pitched, phone signal was decent though so wasn’t an issue.

Disliked *personal preference* I would have preferred gendered facilities, however it would not stop me from visiting again.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Spacious campsite and great facilities (clean and brand new toilets/showers). Flat area next to a working farm. I believe this has opened this year, room to expand if the demand grows. Great host, giving us a leaflet with crucial info, wifi also available. Firepit available to hire, great for seating around in the evening.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The owner is attentive and friendly. Liked the option of hiring a fire pit and plenty of wood supplied. Current toilet and shower facilities are fine and always clean and they are making improvements to create more. We didn't use but liked the option of kitchen, including microwave and oven.

Disliked We didn't dislike anything but it may be too quiet for those with young families.

Local attractions

Shropshire Sculpture Park (five minutes’ drive) exhibits more than 100 artworks on the lush grounds of the British Ironwork Centre. They include the 13-foot Spoon Gorilla (made out of – you guessed it: spoons; upwards of 40,000 of them, donated by people all around the world) and a sculpture honouring police dogs. Dating from the 11th century, moated Whittington Castle (10 minutes) occupies a 12-acre site that is home to ducks, swans and other wildlife. Among the events organised at the castle are alfresco theatre performances, living history weekends and craft fairs. A northbound drive along the A5 takes you past the early 19th-century Chirk Aqueduct (25 minutes), whose arches stretch across the border between England and Wales, and all the way to Chirk Castle (half an hour). This National Trust property is home to a collection of decorative arts that includes a spectacular Japanese chest with mother-of-pearl details.
