  • Small, peaceful adults-only site in the Shropshire countryside
  • Shrewsbury, Oswestry and Powis Castle within a half-hour drive
  • Less than a mile from the River Vyrnwy on the Welsh border
Walking in Wales or strolling through the Shropshire Hills? You’ll be able to do a bit of both when you stay at Mount View Farm – this splendidly rural spot is actually in Shropshire (about 20 minutes’ drive from Oswestry) but it’s so close to the Welsh border that you’ll easily be able to hop between the two whenever you like. There are lots of public footpaths around here, including routes along the banks of the Severn and Vyrnwy rivers, plus plenty of other attractions including castles, a steam railway and the World Heritage Site of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Whichever of these you choose to fill your days with, you’ll be coming back to a fabulously peaceful campsite, well away from urban areas and main roads. There’s very little passing traffic (although you may hear the occasional tractor), so the main soundtrack is likely to be that of birdsong. Keeping the site as an adults-only environment further ups its peaceful vibe, as there won’t be any kids running around playing games. Most guests pitch up in the large camping field, but there is a small area of woodland next to the main site where you’re welcome to set up instead if you’d rather really be in among the wildlife (keep eyes out for foxes and badgers). Being a properly rural spot, you should be in for some great stargazing wherever you choose. Facilities on site include a shower room with toilet and hand basin in the barn by the pitches, along with a cold-water washing-up area, phone charging facilities and a small fridge and freezer. The surrounding villages have a good collection of convenience stores and pubs between them for supplies and meals out.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We had the whole campsite to ourselves. Very peaceful setting. Great for star-gazing.

Disliked: As others have mentioned, only one toilet and shower room. It worked fine for us, with only us there, but it might have been tricky, if others had been staying there too.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Mount View Farm was a peaceful, spacious and pleasant camping spot for our 2 night stay. The large camping meadow is a picturesque spot surrounded by woodland and farm fields. The onsite facilities provided all that we needed and were immaculately clean. There were even one or two unexpected extras such a kettle, toaster and hairdryer for guests to use. A nice touch! For walkers, the well-known local landmark of Rodney's Pillar is around a 6 hour round trip from the campsite. It makes for a rewarding day out, especially if you pop in the The Admiral Rodney pub for a drink on your way back. I would say that this place is ideal for those looking for a small, peaceful site to get away from it all for a few days.

Disliked: No real dislikes to report. Visitors with dogs are very welcome but should be aware that Mount View Farm is a working farm with sheep and chickens. The livestock is enclosed but understandably dogs aren't allowed to run free on the site.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: This site is small and quiet, ideal for couples, hikers or cycle tourists who want a quiet place to stay, as the site is limited to only 5 pitches it makes for a very relaxed stay.

Disliked: There is only a single toilet + shower, which means there is no toilet available if someone is taking a shower. Admittedly during out stay we were the only people camping so the only source of contention was the two of us, I can imagine it raising some anxiety if there were a few more people around.

Liked: Quiet nice farm. Good toilet and shower. Not sure how it would be if it was busier but great with just ourselves and one other couple staying.

Local attractions

Walkers and cyclists should find plenty to keep them busy around here, including the Shropshire Way, National Cycle Route 81 and outings to places like Nescliffe Hill Kynaston Cave (15 minutes’ drive), Admiral Rodney’s Pillar (25 minutes), Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall and Lake Vyrnwy (both 45 minutes). The history of English/Welsh diplomatic relations means there are several castles around this border area too – some in a better state than others. Both Whittington Castle (20 minutes) and Powis Castle (half an hour) are well preserved while Montgomery Castle (35 minutes) is an atmospheric ruin these days. For other days out, visit the decorative metalworks at British Ironwork Centre (20 minutes), take a ride on the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway (25 minutes) or have a wander around the National Trust’s Attingham Park Estate (half an hour), stopping by in Shrewsbury (25 minutes) on the way.
