  • Well-kept caravan pitches next to the Shropshire Union Canal
  • Ironbridge, Attingham Park and the Wrekin within 40 minutes' drive
  • In the grounds of a pub with home-cooked meals and a canalside garden
Parking your motorhome in a peaceful canalside location is a lovely thing. Then again, picking a pitch next to a pub is fantastic for convenient evening meals and drinks. It therefore possibly goes without saying that Wharf Caravan Park – which manages to roll both of those features into one truly splendid Shropshire location – is a real winner of a site. About 10 minutes’ drive from Market Drayton, this park sits right next to the Shropshire Union Canal, giving you easy access to the towpath for walks, fishing or just relaxing and watching the canal boats. It’s also very handily situated in the grounds of a friendly family-run pub that serves home-cooked meals daily as well as keeping a great selection of cask ales, beers, wines and other drinks. Settle down in a cosy corner by the fire in winter, or take your drinks out into the garden in summer – the grounds run down to the canal’s edge so it’s a wonderful spot for a scenic alfresco pint. And of course the major bonus is that you’ll be staying just a couple of minutes’ walk away – so there are no discussions to be had about whose turn it is to drive… The park itself has been nicely set up too, with well-spaced pitches (six metres between each one) that all have electric hookups and access to a chemical disposal point. There’s also drinking water, a washing-up area and 24-hour access to toilets and showers. Families and dogs are welcome at the caravan park, but please note that dogs can't be taken into the pub.

What customers say

A tranquil, tidy campground in a beautiful country setting by the canal. Sites are usually roomy and well-kept. The pub is praised for great food and friendly service. Some found the showers across the road inconvenient, especially with bad weather. Wi-Fi and phone reception are often poor.

Liked Loved how quiet and relaxed it was. Website said 25 pitches but only about 6 occupied. Toilets were always available and clean. Showers were clean and hot and a short walk behind the pub. The site being so quiet we didn't need to queue.

Fantastic to be so close to the canal for paddle boarding.

Ate at the pub both days, great selection of drinks and food arrived amazingly quickly both Sunday afternoon and Monday evening. Sunday menu was great to have more than just roasts. Staff were friendly and the whole check in was smooth and comprehensive.

Liked Lovely quiet site a mile from the nearest village

Disliked Nothing really the pub that runs the site is open 12 till 3 then 6: till 9:30 so handy for food not open late. Maybe a shower block on the touring field?? But wasn't a problem crossing the road for a shower.

Liked Quietness of the site and locality of the canal towpath

Disliked 10amp supply and undeveloped pitches also the location of the 2 male and female showers which are for both touring pitches and permanent pitches. The pub is also not dog friendly even when they have stopped serving food

Liked Very quiet and peaceful site with an excellent pub on site. Pub served a good range of beers and excellent food.

Disliked Facilities on the campsite were a little basic - we didn’t get as far as checking out the shower block as we were only on the site for 14 hours.

WiFi in the pub was not working and there was zero mobile phone coverage

For family-friendly rural outings, meet the animals at Fordhall Organic Farm (10 minutes), Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World (25 minutes) or Trentham Monkey Forest (35 minutes). You’ll also want to spend at least a full day at Ironbridge (40 minutes) – there’s a fine collection of museums here, including Blists Hill Victorian Town and Enginuity as well as the Museum of the Gorge. Not got kids in tow? Try outings to Hodnet Hall Gardens (15 minutes), the Hawkstone Park Follies (20 minutes), the Capability Brown-designed gardens at Weston Park (half an hour) or the grand National Trust - Attingham Park (40 minutes).
