Nottingham Nature Lakes: Site view

General

  • Peaceful site near fishing lake, a sailing club and the river Trent
  • A 20-minute drive from Newark or Lincoln city centre
  • Dog-friendly site with play area and picnic benches

Head to Nottingham Nature Lakes if you're a fan of aquatic activities: this well-maintained park is close to a fishing lake, a sailing club and riverside strolls along the Trent. Land-based activities are also on the cards – a golf club, nature reserve and three pubs can all be reached in a 10-minute drive or less. Several major roads are also nearby, making it a doddle to head out to nearby towns and cities like Newark and Lincoln.

Families are welcome to settle down on a patch of this 13-acre site – the park has a popular play area where the kids can get up to all their usual antics in a safe and friendly environment. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome here (and there's plenty of scope for walkies along the peaceful lanes located directly opposite the site).

Nottingham Nature Lakes also has lots of practical bases covered thanks to amenities like a smart toilet and shower block (with disabled access), a washing-up area and picnic benches. The latter may very well come in handy if you have self-barbecued bites in the pipeline (drive 10 minutes down the road to the nearest farm shop for particularly fine things to cook up).

Large camping field. Quiet. Level pitches. Clean. A lovely nature reserve across the road from the main gate which was perfect for us with having our family dog with us.

    Disliked:

There was only 1 shower and the toilets were communal. Notice on the door to say 1 person at a time but no way of locking the door on the inside to stop anyone from going in. Would be very embarrassing if a man was in there as the 2 urinals were opposite the 2 cubicles and not enclosed. There were only 4 of us on the site at the time but not enough toilet facilities for if the site was fully booked. Had to ring a number to gain entry and never met the owners for the duration of our stay (4nights). Having to open 2 gates and a chain every time to gain entry or leave was quite a bit tedious but also good security.

Field was great especially with young kids could let them run free without worry about them escaping or getting on to a road, field was well looked after. ‘Play area’ is just 2 swings but the girls enjoyed them.

Location was great for us as we were camping the night before visiting Sundown Adventureland which was only 15/20 mins away.

    Disliked:

Toilet block is very small and basic, 2 cubicles with 2 urinals right outside them (shared toilets) not in the best condition but were clean, they got blocked while we there and another camper called the owner and maintenance did come quite quickly to sort them out

Shower again very basic, only 1 and door doesn’t lock properly. I had a really hot shower (too hot even when temp turned down) but hubby’s was freezing and couldn’t get it warm, nowhere to put your clothes or anything while your showering so u have to leave them on the floor or sink

Very noisy dogs in the house next to the field barking a lot through the night.

Great location 10mins drive from Newark show ground and Air Museum, great relaxing site, basic but we like that to get away in the caravan. Woodland walk opposite the entrance, good drainage and flat ground, large pitches with plenty of space. Welcomed by Jake who would be constantly checking in on everyone, wonderful atmosphere. Swings to play on for children also a small number of used bikes for hire. NOTE electric is from an 13amp socket, so need adaptor for caravan thankfully we carry ours with us, but I think the site also loan them as required.

    Disliked:

Nothing really, small toilet and shower block is dated but that being said we use our own facilities in the caravan.

Local attractions

Sporty folk should find plenty to keep them busy around here – if you fancy having the run of a 100-acre lake, get in touch with the friendly local boating club (10 minutes’ walk) to sort lessons or freestyle sails. Joggers, cyclists, dog walkers and the like will find similar amounts of space (and peace and quiet) at Spalford Woods Nature Reserve (10 minutes' walk).

The nearby market town of Newark (20 minutes' drive), meanwhile, is a hive of local history – here you can stroll around high castle walls, delve into England's 17th-century past at the National Civil War Centre or learn about all things aeronautical just outside town at the Newark Air Museum (15 minutes). For more grand old buildings and narrow cobbled streets, head 20 minutes up the road to Lincoln.

Kids clamouring to be entertained? Sundown Adventureland (15 minutes), with its giant soft play area and Angry Birds zone, is a tried-and-tested hit with younger tots, while older teens may well prefer zapping each other at Frontline Combat Lasertag (15 minutes). Animal fans of all ages should set their sights on Messingham Zoo (40 minutes), where fuzzy, furry and spiky beasts abound.
