  • Peaceful site near fishing lake, a sailing club and the river Trent
  • A 20-minute drive from Newark or Lincoln city centre
  • Dog-friendly site with picnic benches
Head to Nottingham Nature Lakes if you're a fan of aquatic activities: this well-maintained park is close to a fishing lake, a sailing club and riverside strolls along the Trent. Land-based activities are also on the cards – a golf club, nature reserve and three pubs can all be reached in a 10-minute drive or less. Several major roads are also nearby, making it a doddle to head out to nearby towns and cities like Newark and Lincoln. Families are welcome to settle down on a patch of this 13-acre site; well-behaved dogs are also welcome here (and there's plenty of scope for walkies along the peaceful lanes located directly opposite the site). Nottingham Nature Lakes also has lots of practical bases covered thanks to amenities like a washing-up area and picnic benches. The latter may very well come in handy if you have self-barbecued bites in the pipeline (drive 10 minutes down the road to the nearest farm shop for particularly fine things to cook up).

Local attractions

Sporty folk should find plenty to keep them busy around here – if you fancy having the run of a 100-acre lake, get in touch with the friendly local boating club (10 minutes’ walk) to sort lessons or freestyle sails. Joggers, cyclists, dog walkers and the like will find similar amounts of space (and peace and quiet) at Spalford Woods Nature Reserve (10 minutes' walk). The nearby market town of Newark (20 minutes' drive), meanwhile, is a hive of local history – here you can stroll around high castle walls, delve into England's 17th-century past at the National Civil War Centre or learn about all things aeronautical just outside town at the Newark Air Museum (15 minutes). For more grand old buildings and narrow cobbled streets, head 20 minutes up the road to Lincoln. Kids clamouring to be entertained? Sundown Adventureland (15 minutes), with its giant soft play area and Angry Birds zone, is a tried-and-tested hit with younger tots, while older teens may well prefer zapping each other at Frontline Combat Lasertag (15 minutes). Animal fans of all ages should set their sights on Messingham Zoo (40 minutes), where fuzzy, furry and spiky beasts abound.

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Everything! Toilets were awful,2 cubicles with 2 urinals next to them, walking in on a man at the urinals was not very nice, the smell of the Toilets well all I can say is hold your breath! Oh and no toilet roll or hand soap available so take your own,No one to show you where to park up,received a text 2 hours after we arrived telling us where to park,no one answered the phone after multiple times trying to call,im a big dog lover but seriously constant barking of the dogs belonging to I assume the owners was not good and I mean constant barking day and night! Would not stay there again even if it was free! Only got good marks for accommodation because it was our own campervan

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Good facilities, could do with some tlc.

Disliked: Dogs barking all night, I mean all night non stop. Not an isolated occasion as I’ve looked at other reviews. Not easy to find. Bit of artistic licence calling it Nottingham lakes

Basic site, but the unruly dogs rule it out as an option for us.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Site was nice, with swings for the kids and was very quiet. Very basic facilities, but everything you need.

Disliked: The dogs bark. A lot. Relentlessly.
We were woken up at around 3am by a large dog which had pulled apart the bin bag of rubbish to look for food.
In the morning there were 4 dogs, all from the owners house which is in the next field, all running around freely. They attacked our dog (a small pug). I had to rush to get her and put her into safety in the van. A few moments later, one then jumped up and pushed over our 2 year old. Yes, it was probably only trying to play, but again we had to put him in the van to keep him safe.

Another small dislike was the amount of flies in the evening. But I appreciate that it is near a lake and stables so inevitable, this wouldn't put me off returning, the dogs, absolutely will.
