Nature reserve and lake at the bottom of the vineyard

  • Peaceful grass pitches at a Nottinghamshire family-run vineyard
  • Twinlakes Park 20 minutes' drive; Belvoir Castle 25 minutes
  • Guided or self-guided tours and tastings available
Sitting out on your pitch and enjoying a glass of wine in the peaceful fresh air as the sun sets is surely one of the finest parts of any camping stay. So how cool would it be if you could take that experience one step further by adding the backdrop of a vineyard to it? That’s exactly what you can do at Hanwell Wine Estate, a family-run vineyard in the Nottinghamshire countryside where they’ve been making wine since 1975 (and winning a few awards along the way). Book in here and you’ll be staying in a peaceful grass paddock with a handful of pitches looking out over the surrounding rural scenery – and the vines, of course. Kids and dogs are welcome here, and there are simple facilities in the form of 24-hour toilets and picnic tables for your evening drinks and meals. Looking at the vines from afar is lovely – but getting closer in is even better. To do that, you can book onto a guided tour and tasting session, or go at your own pace with the ‘sip and stroll’ self-guided trail and tasting flight whenever the café-bar is open. Speaking of the café-bar, it’s usually open from 12-3.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays, serving up local cheeses, Mediterranean platters and cakes as well as wines made on site. At other times, pick up snack supplies in Melton Mowbray (15 minutes’ drive), head to the pub five minutes’ drive away or walk 10 minutes to the service station where there's a supermarket and a couple of food venues.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The winery and the food were excellent. Great to be able to try the wines and not have to worry about driving. Off to the camper for a siesta. Before an evening star gazing.

Disliked Nothing to dislike. The only thing that stopped me giving 10 stars was the lack of showers.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Fantastic location - great space, peaceful, great views. It was so quiet and we slept so well - the planes never bothered us. Lovely to wander through the vineyard!
Beautiful spot for sunset, we were with friends and our children loved the horses in the next field.
Nice to be able to get a drink on the Friday, especially in a heatwave!
Toilets were kept clean and there was a tap for water by the cafe/wine bar.
There was plenty of space to pitch up our tents.
Have already recommended to other people - especially those we know with a campervan as it would be ideal for them!

Disliked Both groups had paid for electric but on arrival there were two plugs and one was in use by another camper so it was a pain to have paid £30 unnecessarily - luckily we could share between friends but it could have been tricky if it was strangers using both plugs!
We wanted to go and try a wine on the Saturday afternoon but they had closed at 3.30 - the only way of knowing this is a chalkboard inside the cafe; it would be good to have it displayed outside for campers as other people got turned away too - this was at 4.30 so still quite early!
Not really anywhere to wash pots - no drainage under the outdoor tap.
A shower would encourage us to return - 2 nights in a tent during a heatwave left us feeling quite gross!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Really loved the peaceful nature of the campsite with only a few other people booked at the same time. The bar on site was lovely and staff were all really friendly. Pitches were relatively flat considering its quite hilly, helped by pitch size being unlimited and having the pick of a large field. Just a note, there is a lot of road noise day & night and on flight path for east Midlands airport and a nearby helipad - this suited us and gave great evening entertainment but might be worth considering for others. (Not much can be done about this though)! Perfect site for a one night stop over!

Disliked Long walk to toilets and these were limited use during the day due to wine estate visitors also using. Feel like a little more information about where water/bins/toilets, as this was not obvious until we used the bar and walked around exploring! Just a little info page or something would be great.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked I expected a field and that's what I got. Staff were friendly, the little bar area was nice and I sampled some of their wine. Toilets were adequate and clean.
Its on the flight path for the heli base and East Midlands but I didn't mind that I enjoyed watching them. It' just off the A46 and easy to get to but you can hear the cars rumbling. Nothing to dislike, we had a lovely evening watching the sun go down over the vineyard.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Peaceful surroundings. Just the sound of some horses in a meadow by the field. Vineyard in the distance. Toilets and a tap. No shower but we knew that when we booked. Fabulous sunset.
