Wheathill Field: Flat and level grounds

General

  • Rural farm site with views over the Welland Valley
  • Market Harborough 10 minutes' drive; Rutland Water 40 minutes
  • Explore 100 acres of farmland; direct links to footpaths

A warm rural welcome is assured at this working farm in Leicestershire, where you can explore 100 acres of farmland and enjoy sweeping views over the gorgeous Welland Valley.

Wheathill Field is in a convenient location just under 10 minutes' drive from the popular town of Market Harborough and its many amenities, while many other attractions and activities within similarly easy reach. Handily, its level and very well-maintained camping pitches have super easy access for wider vehicles – dogs are welcome too.

Once you've settled in, you can amble around the whole farm at your leisure; more serious walkers take the footpaths accessible straight from site, including the historic Jurassic Way, for hikes further afield. Interestingly enough, this site includes an area of rare grasses on steep banks formed during the last Ice Age – take a five-minute walk from the pitches if you fancy seeing them for yourself.

Market Harborough is very handy to have so close by too, with great independent shops and restaurants plus a spacious park with a kids' play area and a fenced dog exercise area. A large sports centre with a pool, gym and tennis courts is also open to visitors.

Wanted something simple, more like old school camping and this fit the bill perfectly.

Just a nice field with grass on a farm and very spacious pitches so you can relax and enjoy the quiet.

    Disliked:

The grass was a little long but just coming out of season so can't really blame them.

A slice of heaven!08/30/2022

What an absolute slice of heaven this site was, spectacular views and surrounded by fields and cattle. Completely back to nature, quiet and peaceful and exactly what we needed to recharge our batteries!

You could not ask for more friendly and hospitable hosts than Jo and Richard who came to greet us on arrival and went round each day to check guests were ok and to have a chat with people.

We visited Market Harborough which has a lovely array of shops, including a fantastic farm shop. We also visited Foxton Lockes where we spent a good few hours watching the barges going through, whilst enjoying a pint and a bite to eat in the pub. There are also 2 cafes to choose from.

We stayed for 2 nights in a tent which was plenty for us as there is no electricity on tent pitches and no washing facilities. If you have a caravan or motorhome, you could comfortably spend a few days here. Yes, if you have a tent, you will have to “rough it” and use the porta loo, but the benefits of this location far outweigh that.

Thank you Jo and Richard for sharing your slice of perfection with guests, we shall be back!

    Disliked:

There was nothing we disliked, only the fact that this is only a site open for 28 days!!! We would love it to become more permanent and be able to visit 2/3 times within a season!
I would have liked to stay longer but as there are no shower facilities or warm water to wash your hands or cooking utensils, 2 nights was enough…but it has made us consider again getting a touring caravan!

Local attractions

The Battle of Naseby of 1645 took place locally – in fact, Wheathill Farm sits on a part of that history, as the Royalists came over these fields during their retreat. The surrounding area has a lot of historic sites worth seeing too, with highlights including stately homes and gardens like Kelmarsh Hall and Gardens (five minutes' drive), Rockingham Castle (20 minutes) and the Althorp Estate (30 minutes).

Walks or cycle rides along the Grand Union Canal are also on the cards, as the site is about a quarter of an hour from the staircase locks at Foxton; a canal museum is also located here if you want to learn more. For more time by the water, you could drive out to Pitsford Water (20 minutes) for a fishing trip, or pack up a picnic and set out for Rutland Water (40 minutes), where watersports like canoeing and kayaking are possible as well as birdwatching and walking.

Got kids to keep entertained? Take them along to the National Space Centre (45 minutes) in central Leicester, to the rides at Drayton Manor Theme Park (an hour) or to Twycross Zoo (an hour) to see the animals.
