Feed the animals around the farm

  • Among fields and woods on a working farm in Hertfordshire countryside
  • Free farm entry for farm trails, woodland play and daily activities
  • Café, bakery, shop and pub, all serving fresh produce from the farm
Amid the tiny villages, broad fields and winding lanes of Hertfordshire, the friendly site of Church Farm is a place of many opportunities. Move to a different pace with a stay at this lovely 170-acre working farm, where you see farming and wildlife up close… and hopefully have a splendid time while you're doing it. There's usually a charge for visitors to get stuck in to the farm's activities, but camping guests will get free entry, so they can wander the farm trails, hit the woodland play area or join in the daily activities. The pigs, goats, sheep and hens on this mixed eco farm may well come and say hello; the whole family can join in the feeding sessions and kids will most likely love foraging through the undergrowth to find eggs for breakfast (have them with just-baked bread from the farm’s ovens). Or let someone else do breakfast for a change: the team dishes them up all day at the café. In the evenings, build your own campfire and grill bangers bought from the farm shop or head to the village pub for home-cooked and locally sourced food. Camping rotates around several fields throughout the season so that the grass can always be kept at its best. On-site facilities include outdoor gas showers, cold water sinks and chemical and compost toilets. Dogs are welcome (for no extra charge) at this ecological nonprofit farm, which also focuses on providing training and work experience for people with special needs, and are allowed in the farm café, shop, on the site and in the local pub.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (woodland)

Liked: Absolutely loved camping in the woods and exploring the farm. My kids loved feeding all the animals and collecting eggs with the farmer. And Beards Wood was a great camping spot. Really brilliant stay! Basic but good facilities and lovely staff!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: My godson liked the cycle trail around the site and the bear hunt.

Disliked: Stayed one night. The best pitches were all cordoned off for groups later in the weeks. The remaining pitches were either exposed to the wind or, in the area we pitched, rather dirty with previous campers rubbish. Also a generator was left to run all evening on another pitch. Complained the next morning and was made to feel it was our fault for not policing their campsite.
Charged £25.50 for a small camp fire kit, very over priced.

From the manager: Hi, we are really sorry to read your review and not sure who you could have spoken to but we do give everyone a number to call at anytime so we can immediately take action if there is a problem. We do have night security who are charged with ensuring the camping fields are quiet all night, and we pride ourselves on clearing up peoples’ litter if its left. There were 3 fields of over 50 acres and lots of alternative space available and we certainly could have accommodated you in a position out of the wind.

A must to visit

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Peaceful. No music. Ground soft, perfect for pegs. Level pitches. Lots of walks.
Staff friendly.
Looking forward to taking the grandchildren next year.

Disliked: Airplanes, can be very noisy throughout the night.
We didn't have take any meat as hoping to purchase from farm shop, disappointed as meat was prepack and no sign of a butcher.

From the manager: Hi, we are happy to hear you enjoyed your stay. We are really sorry to hear you were so disturbed by planes going overhead, they don’t come all the time but come over us when the wind is coming from the west and normally not too loud as we are 20 miles from Luton, but can be heard if it’s a still day.

Local attractions

Take the woodland trails on the site to spot the wildlife of the area, such as kites circling the skies, bats flitting in the trees, and barn owls hooting at night as you're getting toasty by the campfire (look out for badgers too). Off site, head to the Tudor pile of Knebworth Castle (20 minutes’ drive), to roam around the palatial house and grand gardens, have a brontosaurus encounter on the life-sized Dinosaur Trail and top it off by swinging like monkeys in the adventure playground. Or you can all reach for the skies at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (30 minutes), to get up close to Spitfires and Vulcans while wandering through a century of aviation history. Medieval Cambridge (45 minutes) makes a good day trip, where you can punt down the River Cam past the stately colleges, or picnic in the botanic gardens. Open-top tour buses make a sedate way to see the sights, or you can hire bikes (watch out for cobbles). Though part of the university, the Museum of Earth Sciences is geared towards young minds and hands-on experiences, from fossils to earthquakes and dinosaurs to volcanoes. After discovering the secrets of rocks, you could all try climbing: not many hills round here but Clip n Climb Cambridge has 20 indoor challenges for beginners and mountain goats alike.
