  • Relaxed family-run site in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley
  • Near Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape
  • Space to play, huge grassy pitches and close to a forest
Picture your next break among green space, woodland walks and cycling trails in the peaceful woodland setting of the famed Forest of Dean, on the edge of the market town of Coleford… You'll get a warm welcome at this relaxed, family-run and family-friendly park, in an area surrounded by ancient castles and abbeys, smashing scenery and miles of waymarked walking and biking trails. As Greenacres Campsite is right in the middle of the Forest of Dean, across the road from a woodland and within walking distance of the River Wye, it's in a good spot for fishing, bike rides and long woodland strolls, as well as easy access to attractions such as Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, Cannop Ponds and Go Ape at Mallards Pike Lake. Set in a field that stretches across two acres within an 11-acre smallholding, pitches are spacious, level and grassy, and the park is surrounded by huge mature trees that provide good shade and shelter from the elements. Kids should be kept very well occupied at the excellent playground less than five minutes' stroll away, where there's also plenty of space to for ball games and dog walking. Barbecues and campfires are allowed: most handy if you land yourself a fish or two in the Wye or decide to pick up a few sausages in Coleford… Otherwise, there's a good traditional English pub in Newland, a short walk away, and another in Staunton within a 30-minute woodland ramble. The wider local area has plenty of pubs, restaurants and takeaways (many of which are happy to deliver straight to the site).

What customers say

Very clean, well-kept site with roomy, flat pitches & a chill vibe. Staff are praised as friendly & helpful. Toilets/showers are modern & spotless. On-site shop & cafe serve hot food. Great for Forest of Dean/Wye Valley. Coleford town is walkable. Play area better for older kids; access road is steep & bumpy. Highly recommended, many plan to return.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Great welcome. All the staff were very welcoming & friendly. The facilities were immaculate & kept clean all day. Lovely walk into Coleford town center. Wonderful take aways from Malanos & Alis fish & chips. A great location to visit alot of places nearby.

Disliked Felt very crammed in & no privacy, we were on pitch 2 & felt very exposed as it was right near the reception & facilities, everyone would look in on us (& did) as they drove past & no privacy between us, pitch 3 & the bell tent. The "shop" wasn't as stocked as we had hoped for, no bread or eggs, which was abit disappointing. But luckily coleford was only a 5 minute drive away. The cost of the bacon baps was expensive, with only 3 rashers of bacon, that was very dry & salty.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. It was great to hear the positives about our site and good to hear what you did not like as that will help us make evaluate ourselves and the service we provide.
I really am sorry to hear that you did not like your pitch - it is one of our most popular pitches as a lot of our guests like to be nearer to the facilities. I do wish you had let us know that you did not like it when you arrived and we would have moved you to a different pitch quite happily. We do aim to please.
We no longer sell bread and eggs as we are a small site and it is not commercially viable for us to stock perishable items - historically we have thrown out more that we have sold and with Lidl just a mile away, most guests have found it easier to get fresh supplies locally. Our shop really is just a small scale cafe offering refreshments, drinks and snacks and camping essentials that often get left behind - sadly we are not large enough for general groceries.
I am also sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your bacon bap. We don't add salt so I am afraid it is as it comes from the supplier.
We really do try and please everyone and am very pleased that although you don't want to return, you would recommend us.
If you do decide to give us another try, please do call us and let us know which pitch you would like - we have a lot of guests that ring and book specific pitches.
Thank you for the comments about the staff - we are very lucky to have them.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked This is a fantastic campsite and started our road-trip on a high. As we were just two friends travelling, the management very considerately allocated us a quiet, private pitch away from the families and larger groups. The toilets and showers were spacious and very clean. There is a small shop in reception selling essentials, should you forget anything. I'll come back to stay here again if I'm in the area!

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked The site was clean, peaceful and surrounded by gorgeous countryside. The facilities were good and clean. The staff were lovely. The play area was basic but we found an amazing playground a short walk away through fields. My son loved being able to pick up croissants in the morning for breakfast.

Disliked The smell near the portaloos could have been a problem if our pitch was closer to them but luckily it wasnt.

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types are well catered to around here, with canoeing and paddleboarding at Symonds Yat Rock, archery and clay pigeon shooting in St Briavels, and pony trekking at Bream. If you're into golfing, then you're also in luck: Coleford has two courses, both less than 10 minutes' drive away. Follow the walking trail through the ancient 14-acre forest of Puzzlewood – the location for the filming of Dr Who, Star Wars, Merlin and Atlantis – to see rock formations and twisted trees, or visit Clearwell Caves to learn about the forest's 4,500-year ore and ochre mining heritage, both within a couple of easy miles of the site. Heaps of historic spots are within easy reach of Greenacres Campsite too, including Tintern Abbey's ruins and the castles of Raglan, Goodrich and Chepstow. The Dean Heritage Centre is a short drive away in the valley of Soudley, and comes highly recommended by Greenacres staff.
