  • Gloucestershire family campsite with Cotswold Hills views
  • A 15-minute drive to Cotswold Farm Park; 30 minutes to Blenheim Palace
  • Five minutes’ drive to Stow-on-the-Wold; bus service nearby
Along with a spacious grass camping ground (as one might expect of sporting pitches), Stow-on-the-Wold Rugby Club has some seriously eye-catching views of the Cotswold Hills. This site is in a fab location just outside the historic village of Stow-on-the Wold in Gloucestershire, making it a smashing spot for family rambles, touring and gallivanting all over the Cotswolds. From the hilltop pitches you can walk for miles on local footpaths without going near a road (thus making this a cracking base for cyclists too), and if you’re keen to get on the golf course, you can book a round at Naunton Downs Golf Club (10 minutes). Eager to do some city sightseeing but prefer to leave the vehicle behind? No worries, a local bus service leaving from the local village of Oddington (a short walk away) can whisk you off to theatreland in Stratford-upon-Avon (40 minutes) or the dreaming spires of Oxford (55 minutes). Back on site, simple facilities include showers, toilets and a wifi connection (around the clubhouse) so you can keep in touch with the folk back home. Stow (five minutes’ drive) has cafés, bars and a couple of small and handy stores for basics. For more amenities, the best stop is Moreton-in-Marsh (15 minutes) for markets, pubs, supermarkets and indie shops. It’s also got a mainline rail station with services to London.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Hook up pitch was good, toilet and shower facilities good and lots of field space for our dog to run around

Disliked Stayed overnight on a Monday and the rugby clubhouse bar was closed despite there being lots of campers on the site - missed income opportunity !! Never saw any staff on arrival or throughout our stay (not that we needed to see anyone) .

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi, thanks for staying with us & for your review. Our bar is usually open Tuesdays, Thursday, Friday & over the weekend, unfortunately its not cost effective to open every day & even if we are busy its no guarantee that anyone wants a drink!! experience tells us that the costs of the electric & any paid staff we have to use needs a good few people to use the bar before its viable.

Our site isn't fully staffed at all times for similar reasons above, we are an amateur club which needs to manage our costs very carefully as we don't get any revenue other than what we can raise ourselves & the majority of the staff & people who run the club are volunteers, the contact for our manager is on the board on the entrance to the camp site & also in the lobby of the clubhouse along with the local information & maps, & is also on the booking conformation, in the event you would have needed help it was available.

Thanks for staying with us, glad you enjoyed your stay & hope to see you again.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The location has potential, but at the moment, the experience doesn’t match the price.

Disliked We stayed here for the weekend and unfortunately had quite a disappointing experience. The toilet facilities were not clean, and the soap and hand-drying paper weren’t replenished at all during our stay. For £50 for one adult and one child, I expected better — especially when similar basic campsites offer more affordable rates.

On Saturday morning, a vintage car lost control and ran into our tent. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the people involved replaced the tent, but I was surprised that no one from the club or campsite management reached out to check on us. A small human gesture would have made a big difference after such a serious incident.

Overall, the facilities were poorly maintained and there was a real lack of care or presence from those running the site.

From the manager: Good afternoon Nuria, thank for your review, the contents of which are a bit of a surprise to us.
To take your points in order we would comment as follows:

The toilets are cleaned at least twice daily; the times they are cleaned are shown on the cleaning records in both the shower block & also the toilet block. During both cleans the towels etc are topped up if needed. Unfortunately, it was a wet weekend which makes for some transfer of mud & wet grass etc, & as it was an extremely busy weekend it’s unfortunately inevitable that at certain times of the day between cleans, the blocks can suffer with muddy footfall. Our staff on site keep an eye on the toilets & showers however it’s just not possible to have someone there full time on cleaning duty. Regrettably, some people are not very respectful of the blocks & although we provide a mop & bucket & ask that people leave the units as they find them, this doesn’t always happen. If you check back through our reviews on Pitchup, the vast majority mention how clean the showers & toilets are & I think you may have used the facilities at times between cleaning on a wet weekend. Having discussed this with our staff, it appears no one had reported that the toilets were in a poor condition, if we had received any details we would have taken care of it.
With regards to our pricing, we keep a careful watch on our pricing & relative to what our site offers were are the most competitive site within 30 miles of our location that we can find & we aim to keep our prices competitive. We don’t offer more than we provide & again as our reviews appear to demonstrate, we believe we offer value for what we have on our site.

Of more concern is your highlighting of the incident that occurred on Saturday morning. This is the first we have heard of any incident, as, having discussed this with our staff on site, you didn’t report this to us & neither did the car owners. If you did report this to our staff, please can you let me have the details of who you reported this to, we had several staff on site as we had a busy morning in the clubhouse, so someone would have been available & you also had our email.

I have contacted the car club for their comments & it appears that a strap broke on one of the trailers when the car was being loaded, the car then rolled back into a tent. I can imagine this was upsetting for you being in the next tent, & thankfully the tent affected was not occupied & no one was hurt. I understand several of the ladies in the car group offered you support at the time; the damaged tent was replaced with a new like for like tent by the owner of the car which the car club erected for you. I understand also that the owner of the car exchanged contact details with you, & the group had a collection to provide treats for the children.
One of the conditions of the car club being on site is that they provided a risk assessment prior to staying & we will be investigating if the risk assessment was followed & if so, how this incident was allowed to happen, should you wish to see the report please let me know. They also acknowledge that they should have reported this incident to our staff but failed to do so.
Once we’ve reviewed the risk assessment we will review if anything could have been done to prevent this happening & responsibilities for this & also if we change our policy on who can stay on our site.

I’m very sorry you had this experience with us, please be assured that we take any comment & incident on our camping facility seriously & learn from issues when they arise & the enjoyment of people staying with us is our priority.

Would recommend .

Liked Proximity to Stow on Wold

Disliked Noisy site with children running around late at night. Filthy showers and toilets.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi, thanks for staying with us & for your review. we're sorry you didn't appear to enjoy your stay with us, & we're a bit disappointed with your comments re the toilets as several other reviews for the weekend you stayed commented how clean they were. It was a wet weekend & unfortunately some mud & wet grass inevitably gets walked into the toilet & shower block, & its just not possible to have someone on full time cleaning duty. the blocks are cleaned twice a day, the time of cleaning shown on the register on the units, we don't have any record of anyone mentioning dirty toilets to our staff on site, if so we could have actioned it.

I'm sorry that children having fun disrupted your stay, we had a very busy weekend & its inevitable that some children would be on site, again if you felt they behaviour was unacceptable you could have detailed it to our staff who would have discussed with the parents if appropriate.

From the manager: Hi, thanks for staying with us & the review. Liked Showers & toilets are now portacabin style - very clean and hot. Hook up, fresh water and grey waste all handy. Easy to book on pitch up. Site is quite isolated for getting to Stow as ‘bridleway’ is along a fast road BUT lovely walk to nice pubs in Oddington and was advised you can prebook the Robin Bus that does local pick up drop off to Stow. Would stay again.

Disliked Pitches are uneven which can’t be helped so bring you Chocks!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi, thanks for staying with us & for your review.

We're sorry you found the route into Stow along the main road, we There is a much quieter & safer footpath route into Stow which is detailed in the camp site information, along with maps of the route in the clubhouse info centre so should be no reason to walk along the main road & we certainly wouldn't recommend it.
The Robin bus service is very good & is also detailed in the camping information.
Thanks for staying & we hope to see you again.
