  • Peaceful and sheltered adults-only site on a working farm
  • A 15-minute drive from Buxton; Bakewell 20 minutes
  • A few minutes' walk from a traditional country pub and the river Dove
Small in size but big on views – that’s the fine mix on offer at Crowdecote Campsite, an adults-only farm site in the Peak District National Park near the little village of Crowdecote. Green fields, trees and hills are all around at this quiet Derbyshire site, and local beauty spots like the river Dove, Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill are all within comfortable walking distance. Facilities on site are low-key so as not to detract from these peaceful surrounds, but essentials like a toilet, shower, running water and chemical disposal are all provided (the shower has hot water but please note there's no hot water elsewhere). This rural spot is also home to a herd of friendly cattle and their pygmy goat pals Kenny and Dave, all of whom can be seen in fields by the site. Dogs are welcome here, but please keep them on a lead and under control – this is a working farm, after all. Firepits are also welcome, and firewood is available to purchase on site. You'll need to keep all fires/barbecues in a steel container that's raised off the ground (please don't light fires on the ground or try to construct a firepit out of stones). Looking for something to make that view even nicer? A friendly country pub is a short walk away and a handy local bus service to Buxton and Ashbourne stops just opposite the pub, so you won't necessarily need a car for local hill walks (and you can also head straight out to Dragon's Back or Chrome Hill on a footpath from the site). The next village over is Longor (just over a mile away), where there's a café, bar and well-liked local chip shop.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Great setting. Liked the "old school" approach to ammenities - reminded me of the no nonsense site of he 1970s.... but excellent value for all that. Generous pitches. Chilled host Steve added to the welcome vibes. Plus pub only 3 mins walk!

Disliked Not much, but would benefit from installing a repeater wifi in the camp fields... reception varied between a passable 3/10 down to zero... made watching the world cup frustrating!

From the manager: Hi Frank,

Thank you for your feedback.

One point I would like to clarify is that we don't advertise Wi-Fi as a campsite facility. In fact, our Pitchup listing specifically states that Wi-Fi is not available, so guests don't book with the expectation of having a campsite-wide internet connection.

About a month ago, I installed a basic Wi-Fi service as a complimentary convenience for guests who wanted to check emails, browse the internet, or send messages. It covers the area around the Toilet Block and, as a bonus, it covers the Hardstandings very well. However it was never intended to provide high-speed coverage across the entire site for activities such as streaming HD football.

It's therefore disappointing that a free, unadvertised facility has resulted in a lower overall rating. In all honesty, had I not installed the Wi-Fi at all, I believe we may have received a better rating here. That does make me question whether it's worth continuing to provide it.

So, as some feedback for yourself, I'd simply ask that, when leaving reviews, you consider the wider impact they can have. A seemingly minor criticism can significantly affect a small independent business, particularly when it's based on a complimentary service that wasn't advertised or included as part of the booking.

Kind regards,

Steve@CC

Highly recommended to those who appreciate the simple life.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked It was great. I booked online through Pitchup, pitched up, pitched my tent, enjoyed the sunshine, the bird song, the sounds of sheep in the distance. Just lovely. I actually wanted to find the owners and thank them personally for running such a perfect spot but didn’t want to bother them (it’s a working farm) so I do hope they see this.
