  • Working farm site in the Peak District with far-reaching views
  • A mile and a half from Mam Tor via a path; Castleton a mile
  • Next to a pop-up café (open weekends); dogs allowed
Hankering for a stunningly rugged landscape full of opportunities for hiking, cycling, climbing and other outdoor activities? On a working farm within the Peak District National Park, Castleton Camping is the place to be. Regardless of whether you've come here to scale Mam Tor, the high peak a mile and a half from the site that’s accessible via a footpath, or whether you simply fancy a change of scenery, a stay at this laidback rural site opens up ample possibilities. This place is half a mile from the small village of Castleton, which is well-served by pubs and cafés. It’s a peaceful area and those of you who like your breaks full of rural hikes will be happy to find that there’s great access to local footpaths, many of which can be reached straight from the farm gates. If you need a light bite before you set off down yonder, a small pop-up café just next to the site is open on weekends for snacks. The amenities here are simple, with just a portable toilet available, but self-sustaining guests are welcome to set up campfires and barbecues. Please note that Castleton Campsite does not have running water. Castleton Camping also embraces well-behaved dogs but asks that they are kept on a lead at all times when around the site.

What customers say

This campsite offers stunning Peak District scenery, with direct access to Mam Tor and lovely valley views. It's a no-frills spot with clean portable toilets and an honesty box for supplies. Castleton village with pubs and shops is a short walk away. Campers report a peaceful atmosphere with respectful visitors and friendly staff. Some noted sloping fields and a lack of drinking water/showers, but many found it ideal for short stays.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Fabulous relaxed campsite in a great location. Set in beautiful countryside and only a 20 minute walk into the lovely Castleton. Toilets clean with washing up facilities. No showers but not a problem if you can do without.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked A lovely, peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. Friendly touches (such as the honesty box filled with homemaker goodies, bottles of water, marshmallows, etc). Great that the site permits both bbqs and fires. A very nice environment for our kids first camping experience

Disliked Nothing - everything was as advertised and expected. A great place to camp

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Location was excellent and site was not too busy. There was cold running water and one sink to wash up.

View up to Mam Tor and about 30 mins walk to Castleton. Take cash if you plan to use honesty box.

Excellent phone signal!

Disliked Toilets were grim. We knew there’d be no hot water or showers but didn’t expect toilets to be as they were.

No one on site to watch over things on site so a couple of groups of youngsters were up into the early hours being noisy.

Liked A really beautiful location and the lady who was running it (and working really hard) was very helpful, welcoming and friendly. She kept the toilets clean and came round regularly too, to sell wood etc.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We loved the campsite, it was quiet and clean. The sheep and goats came to visit us which the children loved. Also horses and cows to see.Amazing scenery . 20 minute walk into castleton ( that was with 4 children). The toilets are basic but well maintained and the large sink for washing up was great. Honesty box was something we used and liked the selection that was available. Would definitely recommend if your not worried about having showers

Local attractions

With lots of historic sites to see, landscapes to hike and caverns to descend into, the first bit is deciding where to start. For days hiking, the Pennine Way starts in Edale (15 minutes’ drive) and heads out onto moors, past reservoirs and gritstone edges. A hike with a view is certain at Ladybower Reservoir (15 minutes) too. Five miles through Cave Dale (30 minutes' walk), a limestone valley, is just as splendid. Places you might want to visit on the way include Castleton village and Peveril Castle - and there are views towards Mam Tor and The Great Ridge too. Caverns on your ‘to-explore’ list? Take an underground boat trip in Speedwell Cavern (35 minutes), investigate the Blue John stone in Treak Cliff Cavern (five minutes' drive) or learn rope-making in Peak Cavern (25 minutes' walk). When it’s time to extend your learning to history in the Peak District, Peveril Castle (25 minutes) above Castleton village is one the closest ruins. For somewhere that has survived the test of time, and now makes a rather excellent picnicking location, is Chatsworth House (30 minutes' drive). The estate also has a farmyard and playground.
