  • Working farm site in the Peak District with far-reaching views
  • A mile and a half from Mam Tor via a path; Castleton a mile
  • Next to a pop-up café (open weekends); dogs allowed
Hankering for a stunningly rugged landscape full of opportunities for hiking, cycling, climbing and other outdoor activities? On a working farm within the Peak District National Park, Castleton Camping is the place to be. Regardless of whether you've come here to scale Mam Tor, the high peak a mile and a half from the site that’s accessible via a footpath, or whether you simply fancy a change of scenery, a stay at this laidback rural site opens up ample possibilities. This place is half a mile from the small village of Castleton, which is well-served by pubs and cafés. It’s a peaceful area and those of you who like your breaks full of rural hikes will be happy to find that there’s great access to local footpaths, many of which can be reached straight from the farm gates. If you need a light bite before you set off down yonder, a small pop-up café just next to the site is open on weekends for snacks. The amenities here are simple, with just a portable toilet available, but self-sustaining guests are welcome to set up campfires and barbecues. Please note that Castleton Campsite does not have running water. Castleton Camping also embraces well-behaved dogs but asks that they are kept on a lead at all times when around the site.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The views, the facilities and the space.

Disliked: No drinking water (but that was clearly advertised). Not sure why there was a ban on awnings?

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Peace and quiet! Lots of space for pitching and roaming. Ground was perfect. Surrounded by beautiful scenery. Facilities were pristine.

Disliked: Had everything I wanted in a camping trip. I wouldn’t expect it but there wasn’t drinking water or WiFi but that’s camping if your doing it right.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Massive field. pitch where you like. Amazing views. Toilets are nice portaloos, better than some toilet blocks on other campsites, clean and warm. Lots of space for kids to run about. Animals in surrounding fields for them to see. Polite laid back staff. Oh and did I mention the amazing views!!

Disliked: No there aren't showers but we only stopped 1 night and were able to have a wash so it's not a problem.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Loved this campsite! Toilets were immaculate and was always available to be used/never had to queue and always were stocked with toilet roll!, the campsite itself was perfect, location was 10/10 just a short 5 minute walk from the village centre, was a lot of space for all campers to space out/wasn’t crammed in, had our personal space whilst camping. It was clean, no rubbish left around, and staff who came to collect the rest of the money were lovely and friendly! All in all 10/10, making a return very shortly.

Disliked: Nothing that we disliked, there isn’t any shower facilities however this is put in the discription of the campsite, but as we only did a short stay this didn’t bother us in the slightest.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The setting is spectacular with mountain trails up to Mam Tor and other peaks starting right from the camp site. The facilities are simple but clean and well-maintained. Owner was friendly and chatty and the booking process was simple. Town of Castleton is easily walkable- with lots of nice pubs and cafes and shops. Would definitely come again.

Disliked: For a longer stay, showers would be needed. It's a shame there isn't a way to accommodate booking small tents for solo adults as opposed to the one-pitch-per tent rule. But not a big problem.

Liked: Beautiful scenery, lovely campsite toilet facilities super clean, walking distance from mam tor and little town centre full of restaurants and pubs, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The host was lovely and super helpful! We had an issue finding the location but she helped guide us to camp!

Disliked: Couldn’t fault anything! We’d definitely come more prepared next time as we couldn’t find any supermarkets walking distance!

Local attractions

With lots of historic sites to see, landscapes to hike and caverns to descend into, the first bit is deciding where to start. For days hiking, the Pennine Way starts in Edale (15 minutes’ drive) and heads out onto moors, past reservoirs and gritstone edges. A hike with a view is certain at Ladybower Reservoir (15 minutes) too. Five miles through Cave Dale (30 minutes' walk), a limestone valley, is just as splendid. Places you might want to visit on the way include Castleton village and Peveril Castle - and there are views towards Mam Tor and The Great Ridge too. Caverns on your ‘to-explore’ list? Take an underground boat trip in Speedwell Cavern (35 minutes), investigate the Blue John stone in Treak Cliff Cavern (five minutes' drive) or learn rope-making in Peak Cavern (25 minutes' walk). When it’s time to extend your learning to history in the Peak District, Peveril Castle (25 minutes) above Castleton village is one the closest ruins. For somewhere that has survived the test of time, and now makes a rather excellent picnicking location, is Chatsworth House (30 minutes' drive). The estate also has a farmyard and playground.
