  • Lovely six-acre Derbyshire site in the village of Stenson
  • A 20-minute drive from Derby and close to canal and river activities
  • Pizza oven and barbecue area on site; local pub five minutes' walk
How far do you have to go from a city centre to find a place for a relaxing rural stay? In the case of Derbyshire’s Four Oaks Campsite, the answer is not far at all – this six-acre site in the village of Stenson is a mere five miles from Derby. That location makes this a pretty convenient site to travel to (especially if you’re a local looking for a quick breath of fresh air), and once you’re here you’ll be able to leave all thoughts of urban life behind. The surroundings here are all about countryside, canals, rivers and village pubs. The closest pub, in fact, is about five minutes’ walk away – and there are several more within a couple of miles, along with cafés, takeaways and shops. The shops in nearby Willington (five minutes’ drive) are likely to be particularly handy, as the site has a great little outdoor cooking area for guests to use, with a pizza oven and barbecues, plus picnic tables where you can serve up your creations. The level grass pitches also have access to a heated bathroom block (with ladies, gents and accessible facilities), a chemical disposal point and a communal fridge where you can stash your wares until you’re ready to cook. Golf, archery and axe throwing are among the outdoor activities you can try out nearby, and the proximity of both canal and river means there are plenty of options for fishing, launching canoes or just going for a scenic walk. A splendid two-mile walk along the canal brings you to Mercia Marina, where there is a nice assortment of shops, cafés and restaurants.

What customers say

A friendly, relaxed campsite with spacious, level pitches and easy access. Praised for its canal-side setting with nearby pubs and cafés, plus great walking. Staff are helpful and welcoming. Facilities are basic but clean for most, though some noted dated amenities and occasional drainage smells. Road and air traffic noise reported by a few.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Nothing

Disliked Dated facilities, high price per night, permanent residents living in mobile caravans.
Wouldn't recommend and never going back again!
Didn't bother having a shower as facilities were not clean or in a good condition.

Powered grass campsite

Liked The site is very close to the canal with a couple of pubs close by and more in Willington further along the towpath and is very pleasant. It was a short drive into the middle of Derby, which was ideal for our weekend plans.

Disliked This is a very basic campsite. Reception is simply the door at the end of the toilet block. Unfortunately, there were a number of 'travellers' who seemed to be there permanently. This meant that a very basic, dated shower and toilet block was being used constantly and which I didn't find it very clean.
There is constant road noise from the A50 and a few airplanes above, so wasn't the most relaxing place to stay.
Don't forget your long electrical cable. An electrical power supply is looped around the field, so you may need to use your cable to get to it.

Liked Nice friendly site. Not too big but plenty of space for the pitches and access is really good. The Electric powered everything we needed with no issues. The kids were allowed to play and catch crickets (not too regimented). There was a little cafe by the canal a few minutes walk away which did a nice breakfast and hot chocolate. Plenty of walks from site. Peaceful site really, couldn’t hear much road noise. All in all a pleasant 4 day stay.

Disliked As others have said there was a drain smell on the first day but it didn’t really affect our stay that night and it had gone for the rest of the trip.

Powered grass campsite

Liked Laid back, quiet site, near to a pretty canal with tea room and pub. Flat pitches and firewood available to buy for fire pits. Pizza oven and barbecue for campers to use.

Disliked Dated and cobwebby toilets and showers. Toilet paper was missing on a couple of occasions, and only one soap for four sinks. Road and train noise. Not the country idyll promised on the website. Have paid less for more.

Liked Flat pitch
Friendly staff
Lots of fresh drinking water points
16 amp electricity
Close to canal and marina - lots of local things to do

We really enjoyed staying at this camp site. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. I had a problem with my car roof box when we due to depart and the owner let us stay on site whilst we waited for a family member to come and collect all our equipment.

Loads of firewood for £10, very generous.

Local attractions

If your countryside break isn’t complete without a cute farm animal or two, start with an outing to Bluebell Dairy Ice Cream Farm (25 minutes’ drive), where you can meet Highland cows, miniature ponies, pygmy goats and kunekune pigs before sampling something from the range of tempting ice creams. Alternatively, meet the fluffy alpacas and maybe even take some for a walk at Charnwood Forest Alpacas (20 minutes). Walking trails nearby include routes along the banks of the Trent & Mersey Canal and the River Trent. A particularly intriguing route goes via Anchor Church Caves (10 minutes) – a series of natural caves historically used as a worship spot for Christians evading persecution. For a bit more history, head to the 1620s House and Garden at Donington le Heath (half an hour), visit National Trust - Calke Abbey (20 minutes) or check out the vintage aircraft at East Midlands Aeropark (20 minutes). And if you haven’t explored Derby (20 minutes) yet, it’s worth noting there are some great museums there too, including the Museum of Making and Derby Computer Museum.
