  • Valley site a mile from the Peak District town of Buxton
  • Surrounded by woodland and with a gorge and viaduct at one end
  • Play area on site; half an hour's walk from the town centre
Travelling types, move Buxton to the top of your list… This Derbyshire spa town and gateway to the Peak District is only a mile away from Lime Tree Holiday Park – it'll take you five minutes to drive or half an hour to walk into the town centre from this handy base. The site is in its own valley in a Special Landscape Area, surrounded by farmland and with a wooded limestone gorge and old railway viaduct at one edge. (Maps, brochures and sheets of information on local attractions are at the Lime Tree reception, or ask one of the helpful staff for advice on things to see and do.) Facilities on site include an adventure playground where kids can let off steam and an ice block freezing facility so that you can look forward to a chilled drink after a long day out adventuring. The site also has a microwave where you're welcome to heat babies’ or toddlers' food and a gas cylinder exchange service. Among the amenities are a modern toilet block (in the centre of the field, no less), showers and a washing-up area.

Primitive grass tent campsite (six person)

Liked Facilities at park were of very high quality and kept spotlessly clean with a lot of thought to make them user friendly. The staff friendly and welcoming.

Disliked A minor thing that may not suit some campers that the main none electric camping field is sloped

Primitive grass tent campsite (six person)

Liked Site well looked after, toilets cleaned regularly, beautiful and convenient location.

Disliked One of the main reasons for booking was due to having a children's play area. The only play equipment not out of service was the swings which was disappointing especially with no prior warning of this.

Liked Friendly staff. Great location with beautiful views. Spacious pitches. Great toilet and shower facilities.

Disliked If it’s windy, you might want to pitch at the lower end of the slope!

Primitive grass tent campsite (two person)

Liked Facilities are very clean, walking distance from Buxton. Park is in a very pretty area. Generally the site was very good.

Disliked Staff very keen to make sure there was no wrong doing in the early evening, but less so once the 10PM no noise was in place. It was a bank holiday so expected it to be busy but noisy people who ignored requests to be quiet did tarnish a nice campsite. Also the toilets play the radio all night so if the windows are left open you hear that too.

Local attractions

Like Bath in the south, Buxton was founded as a spa town by the Romans and became popular in Georgian times for the supposed health-giving properties of its spa water. Fill up your water bottle at St Anne's Well in front of the Crescent, then go on a Buxton tour to see its Georgian architecture and smart landscape, including the ornamental gardens at the Pavilion, and the Buxton Opera House, the highest in the country. The Peak District as a whole is full of market towns stuffed with local produce and interesting attractions: go to Bakewell for the essential eponymous tart; Leek for Rudyard Lake and the steam train; Ashbourne for a couple of hundred listed buildings, and fellow spa town Matlock Bath. If you don’t mind travelling a bit further, Sheffield and Manchester can both be reached in an hour to an hour and a quarter. Also nearby is Castleton with Norman Peveril Castle and four show caves; if going underground is your thing, also check out the caves at Poole’s Cavern just outside Buxton. And there’s caving (and climbing) aplenty all around the Peak District National Park, along with stacks of outdoor pursuits like hot air ballooning, gliding, watersports and biking the Tissington and Manifold trails.
