  • Luxurious family-sized safari tents at a Berkshire working farm
  • The Living Rainforest 10 minutes' drive; Highclere Castle 25 minutes
  • Farm shop and café on site; free guest access to farm park activities
If you're keen on the idea of a free-range family holiday but don't want to give up on life's little comforts, then a break at Bucklebury Farm could well be the thing for you. This 77-acre Berkshire farm has all the hallmarks of a classic outdoorsy holiday – the kids will be able to build dens, go bug hunting and help you build campfires – but there’s no need to rough it on the accommodation side as you'll be sleeping in a smart safari tent with proper beds and an ensuite bathroom. Sleeping under canvas gives you that sense of adventure, but there's plenty of luxury thrown in too with things like bed linen, towels, a woodburning stove and a mini kitchen (with cooker, kettle and coffee maker) included. And to help you make the most of that alfresco time too, you'll have a barbecue and outdoor furniture provided so you can cook outside or just nurse a cup of tea while listening to the birds singing in the trees. Of course, one of your reasons for coming to the countryside may well be to spot some animals (especially if you've got kids in tow…), and this place shouldn’t disappoint on that front. For starters it's next door to a deer park where you’ll often spot fawns alongside their parents. And the farm also has its own farm park where guests have free access to the various activities like pet handling and tractor rides (plus a play barn for those damp days). The farm also has a café and farm shop (with a 10% discount for guests), so it's easy to keep everyone fed; anything else you need can be picked up at the supermarket or shops 10 minutes' drive away in Thatcham.

Liked: Such a lovely site for the children. A great experience camping so close to all the wildlife. The view from the tent was lovely!!! Our little girl loved throwing on her wellies and being able to explore and have all the facilities of the park directly on your doorstep. We went during the Easter holidays so we got to take part on lamb feeding and the Easter hunt. Feeding the deer was her favourite so we did it several times during our stay. Food at the cafe was lovely. Cabin was great, shower was hot and with the fire going it was really warm and cosy. Great for us all to be without tv and screens for a few days - we had a fab time playing games in the evenings by candlelight! Everyone on the farm was really friendly and really knowledgeable about all the animals too.

Disliked: Next time I would just take my gas camping stove as although cooking on the fire was fine and did everything we needed, I would have just liked my morning cuppa bit quicker than having to get a fire going each day.

Local attractions

Keen to keep that countryside vibe going? Learn about farm life of the past at the Museum of English Rural Life (half an hour’s drive) or take a slow-paced journey along the canal with the Kennet Horse Boat Company (25 minutes). For a rather grander experience, pay a visit to Highclere Castle (25 minutes), which found TV fame as the location for Downton Abbey. Or see if you can spot some more exotic wildlife (like lizards and monkeys) among the tropical plants at The Living Rainforest (10 minutes). There are plenty of family-friendly activities around too – perhaps you’d like to try canoeing along the Thames (25 minutes), bouncing across the floating inflatables at Lagoona Park (25 minutes) or putting your way around Knights Realm Adventure Golf (half an hour). (And for a restorative pint after all that, the folk at the farm recommend Renegade Brewery, 10 minutes' drive away.)
