Local attractions

Fishing, watersports and swimming are great ways to enjoy some outdoor time here, and there are also a couple of lovely walking trails around the site – try the Perimeter Trail or the Bobby Wilkins shoreline trail for a real in-depth explore of your surroundings. Beyond that, there are more trails to explore around Phelps Lake (25 minutes' drive), in Merchants Millpond State Park (55 minutes) or along the Atlantic shoreline from Nags Head (an hour). Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge (25 minutes) is another great option, with an arts centre and the red wolf conservation centre. To learn a bit about the area's past, visit the Washington County African-American Museum and Cultural Center (10 minutes), Somerset Place State Historic Site (25 minutes), Historic Hope plantation (35 minutes) or cross the Sound to visit the historic town of Edenton (20 minutes). All the trails at Spruill Farm are named in honour of the African-Americans who worked on the farm over the years.
