Fishing around for a fine beach destination with a handful of historic cities within driving distance? In the former fishing village of Noordwijk, EuroParcs Parc du Soleil might be the fix you need. The sandy beach and dunes of Noordwijk are just a 15-minute bike ride away from the park – and there’s bicycle hire available on site, which will sort out your two wheels. Young, old or travelling with dogs… don’t fret. EuroParcs Parc du Soleil is suitable for all, with its playground, indoor swimming pool and gorgeous surrounds (for walks and such). If you’re a big fan of life on the sand, this south Holland spot is a stand-out too. The ocean is 20 minutes’ walk away, along with a stack of beach bars and restaurants along the boulevard. With a restaurant terrace on site, that’s lunch, dinner or drinks sorted. Culture’s sorted too – there are a handful of historic cities within driving distance of the site, including Leiden, Haarlem, The Hague and Amsterdam (between 25 minutes and 45 minutes’ drive away). If you’re lucky enough to be rolling by between the end of March and the end of May, the area’s iconic bulb fields should be blooming too. The flower fields of Lisse are 20 minutes’ drive away, and the Keukenhof fields are 15 minutes’ drive away, but right opposite, there’s another generous tulip field without the drive.

Local attractions

Tulip fields, sand dunes and beaches aside, south Holland has a sweet set of historical sites and museums in its cities. Make your way to Leiden (25 minutes’ drive), where the 28 kilometres of canals are lined with historic architecture and The Museum de Lakenhal has art by Dutch Masters. In historic Haarlem (35 minutes), set about strolling the Grote Kerk market square or rummaging around the Frans Hals Museum and the Teylers Museum. The Hague (40 minutes) has yet more historic sites: a Gothic-style complex, the Escher in Het Paleis and the Peace Palace to name but a few. Before you get around to Amsterdam (45 minutes), which is further out and famed for its canals and mix of bizarre and significant museums, you might want to pack any kids in the car to explore Corpus (15 minutes), an interactive museum which travels through the human body.
