  • Wooden cabins at a Puglia vineyard five minutes’ drive from Ordona
  • Herdonia Archaeological Site five minutes’ drive; Foggia 25 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with splendid views across the vines
You’ll get a real sense of rural Puglia when you stay at Arkènos – this small glamping site five minutes’ drive from Ordona is part of a family-run vineyard, and everything here speaks of the setting. The cabin accommodation makes use of lots of natural wood and enables guests to enjoy the gorgeous views (over the Nero di Troia vines to the fields beyond) and the peaceful surroundings. The sturdy wooden houses sleep up to four and are kitted out with everything you need for a comfy stay, including a double bed up on the mezzanine, a well-equipped kitchenette, a cosy living area with a sofa bed and a bathroom with shower. There’s also an outdoor table and chairs – just the spot for your evening drinks overlooking the vines. Arkènos is a place where you can really slow down for a bit, reconnect with nature, breathe the fresh air and perhaps tap into your creative side. Events held on site include outdoor yoga sessions, craft workshops and dinners among the vines. You can also book a massage if you need some help getting into relaxation mode. If you prefer to be out and about, there are plenty of wineries to visit nearby, plus historic attractions like the Herdonia Archaeological Site (five minutes’ drive), with the remains of an ancient Roman theatre and baths. Foggia and Troia are close by for urban wanders, and you can get to the beach within about 40 minutes’ drive.

Local attractions

The Bosco Incoronata di Foggia Natural Regional Park (15 minutes’ drive) is renowned for its ancient oak trees, which create welcome shade as you walk along its trails. On the outskirts of the reserve is a modern sanctuary (loosely shaped like a classic Puglian trullo) built to honour an apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1001. In Foggia (25 minutes), check out the cathedral, originally built in the 12th century, then restored in a Baroque style following a devastating earthquake in the 1730s. The gardens of the Villa Comunale Karol Wojtyła have shaded trails, a playground and a woodland folly at the eastern end, while the Parco Campi Diomedei is a vast green on the grounds of a former hippodrome. An area of wetlands near the Adriatic coast, the Il Monte State Nature Reserve (40 minutes) is home to pink flamingos, kingfishers and marsh hawks. Just to the south are the salt pans of Margherita di Savoia (the largest in Europe) and to the north, the sandy beaches of Zapponeta.
