Peaceful strolls and spectacular sunsets on the banks of lovely Lake Bolsena – sound like a splendid way to spend a few days? If that’s a ‘si, grazie’, aim for Camping Amalasunta, 10 minutes’ drive from Montefiascone and right next to Lazio’s largest lake. Certain guests could easily spend many an hour simply looking out over the water from here; more active sorts can easily head out for waterside walks, fishing, watersports, swims and boat trips to explore the volcanic lake’s twin islands. Other options for outings might include mountain walks around Monti Cimini, wallowing in thermal spa waters or seeking out local cuisine in little hill villages. Not that you have to stray far for either activity or eats if you don’t want to – you might equally elect to stick around for games of football and beach volleyball, followed by sampling local wines with lake views out on the terrace and dining on pizzas served up with a side order of live music.

Beautiful lakeside spot with shady sites & helpful staff. Peaceful, close to water. BUT, toilets/showers are old & need an update. Hot water's pricey, same for solo campers. One bloke couldn't get the advertised WiFi.

Le camping donne directement sur le Lac de Bolsena avec un petit bar d'ambiance, super pour les soirées d'été. Les enfants se sont régalés :)

Liked De plaats was ruim en met veel schaduw.
Mevrouw aan de receptie was heel vriendelijk
Goede camping om als doortocht camping te gebruiken

Disliked De douchen en wc's waren verouderd.
En het systeem om voor warm water nog bij te moeten betalen vonden we niet oke, dit kon best in de prijs van de camping

Local attractions

It’s pretty scenic from all corners, Lake Bolsena, so it’s a splendid idea to set out on a complete circuit of the lakeside – ideally not all in one go, lest that leaves you shooting past some of the sights. Start at the south side with a trip to your local village, Montefiascone (10 minutes’ drive), to see Rocca dei Papi (where the popes – sensibly – spent their summers in days of yore) and take in the view from the cathedral. Move along, then, to Capodimonte (15 minutes) for a bit of time on the beach or to board boat trips to the lake’s little islands. Getting to the other side of the lake and the main settlement on the shoreline, Bolsena should only take around 25 minutes by car. There’s a castle, archaeology site and museum up here for folk who like to learn about the past, or boat hire, horse riding and hikes for those who’d rather flex their muscles. Make the most of the town’s tasty treats too – its streets are stuffed with places to feast on fish or snaffle ice creams, coffees and pastries by the lake’s edge.
