It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site in the Drôme village of Le Grand-Serre
- A 10-minute drive from Facteur Cheval’s Ideal Palace
- Bar-restaurant, bikes to borrow and lots of summer activities
Bring the kids, bring the grandparents, bring the dogs – Camping le Grand Cerf, in the Rhône-Alpes village of Le Grand-Serre, prides itself on being a place that caters for all the family.
Throughout the summer, this friendly site is alive with all sorts of activities: by day it’s all crafts and games for the kids and aqua gym classes or various sporting endeavours for the grownups, and of an evening everyone gathers for theme meals, live music, karaoke and the like.
But it’s not all about the organised antics, mais non – there’s plenty to keep you busy at other times too: among the modern and well-maintained facilities are a heated pool, paddling pool, multisports pitch, tennis court, pétanque court, table tennis, beach volleyball court, giant trampoline, playground and a mini farm with a flock of friendly animals. And in fab news for the penny-conscious, all the equipment is free to use including racquets, balls, bikes and wifi.
As for that great holiday pastime of eating, there’s a bar and restaurant on site serving up traditional dishes as well as homemade pizzas and snacks. For DIY types, small shops are a few minutes’ walk away in the village and a supermarket is 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions
For folk who like a somewhat unusual attraction, Facteur Cheval’s Ideal Palace (10 minutes away by car) has to be on a list of local visits. Built singlehandedly by a rural postman over the course of 33 years from 1879, it’s a fab place for a wander, keeping eyes peeled for fairies, elephants and other beings that lurk within the design.
Animal antics await for visitors to Les Chèvres qui Dansent goat farm 20 minutes’ walk from the site, with wilder ones to see as you drive through Safari de Peaugres, 45 minutes away by car. Meanwhile, any budding pirates you’ve brought along can join in all sorts of swashbuckling fun at Miripili, l’île aux Pirates theme park, half an hour away.
If you’d like a more grownup day out, take your tastebuds on a tour to the Jean Gauthier alambic distillery, the Valrhona Cité du Chocolat and the wineries around Valence. All are within a 45-minute drive.
