General

  • Peaceful site in the small town of Péronne
  • Near the major WWI battlefields
  • On-site fishing, cycle hire, play area and big communal dining area

What a pretty place… and with a well-stocked pond for French fishing too. Camping Le Brochet is in the Somme valley, between a small lake and the commune of Péronne, and in an area famed for its fishing as well as its 245-kilometre river.

It's also an area of Great War remembrance: the World War I fields where the Battle of the Somme was fought are close to the site and the region's Great War museum is in the local town of Péronne. Regional capital Amiens is about an hour away.

The site has a play area, a ping pong table, cycle hire, a pétanque court and a spacious alfresco eating area that also comes with free wifi. There are also big sinks for dishwashing, and a large amenities block with hot running water and free showers.

Please note that a small daily charge applies for the fishing: pay on arrival if you're going to cast off.

  • Liked:

Friendliness & helpfulness of site manager; Location in the town and the location by the fishing pond; it's rural feel in a town; The site layout with hedged pitches. The toilet facilities and lovely hot showers although basic, were kept clean and in good working order. We would definitely return and recommend the site to others.

    Disliked:

Would like to see more effective recycling of waste with better labelling of what goes into each bin. There were plenty of big bins into which campers had thrown anything & everything.
Some more hardstanding in different areas of the site I.e. lower levels, would be useful for motorhomes.

Bigger pitches than advertised. Come were over 25m deep. Good Wi-Fi reception. Very helpful staff. Very reasonably priced. Laundry was only 2 Euro's!. Although right in the middle of a town you wouldn't know it. Nice dog walk areas very close. Be aware that the sign you see when you get to the site actually says "Camping Municipal Etang du Brochet .

    Disliked:

Shower blocks could do with a good dose of TLC, but this reflected in the price you pay.

From the manager...

Thank you very much about your opinion.

Hoping to see you soon and have a nice day ! =)

Quiet site. Near to all ww1 sites. Young man on reception was very friendly and helpful.

    Disliked:

Toilets are very dated, showers had no heads on so everything in shower got soaked. Washing up facilities very limited. No privacy in toilet block.

Nice site for an overnight. Nice friendly welcome. Facilities were very clean despite being dated. Lots of hot water. Good sized pitches - some very big. Some pitches needed long cables to the electrics. Good free wifi signal near the office. Town centre location so easy walk for food, supplies etc. Good supermarkets in the town.

    Disliked:

Barrier closes at 20:00hrs and reopens at 08:00 - so no good for turning up late or leaving early for ferries etc.

From the manager...

Thank you so much about your opinion.

If you arrive after 20:00hrs you have our phone number on the gate to open you.
And if you want go out before 8:00hrs just tell us while the recption open.

Hoping to see you soon and have a nice day ! ;)

Local attractions

The main sights to see at the quiet small town of Péronne are the Alfred Danicourt Museum, its 13th-century castle and its Museum of the Great War, with two main permanent exhibitions as well as overall information on the conflict. The battlefields and memorials relating to the Somme are within easy driving distance from town.

A Péronne farmers' market is on every Saturday to pick up fresh Picardy produce to have back at the barbie or for a picnic out of town; bikes can be hired at the Péronne tourist information centre to access over 120 kilometres of path along the Somme Canal.

Within an hour's drive is Somme department capital Amiens, one of France's Towns and Lands of Art and History and also known for its huge Christmas market every December, the biggest in northern France. Its best known building is its cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 13th century; among its other most visited attractions are the hortillonnages or floating gardens, the Jules Verne House, Picardy Museum and the old quarters of Saint-Leu and Saint-Maurice.

The local swimming pool is 200 metres from the site.
