  • Family-friendly site on the outskirts of the medieval town of Loches
  • In the Loire Valley and within 35 minutes’ drive of Amboise
  • Go-karting and inflatable play areas; restaurants 10 minutes' walk
Going to the Loire Valley in search of green scenery, Renaissance châteaux and old towns? This should be the easiest decision you make today: signing up for a stay at Camping La Citadelle, a green landscaped garden on the outskirts of the medieval town of Loches and a 15- to 25-minute drive from several of those popular Loire Valley châteauxs. The team here takes hospitality very seriously, so not only are they very friendly, but they also look after a convenient range of services and facilities. There’s a bread, pastry and Touraine wine delivery service – all three being of the utmost importance on any holiday, of course – and, throughout July and August, there’s a restaurant dishing up delicious dishes like burgers, pizzas, salads and ice cream sundaes. In the high season, concerts and dance evenings take place on the bar’s terrace. Outside of July and August, most likely, you’ll be thinking about eating out. It couldn’t be much easier, with Loches town centre set just a 10-minute walk away along the river. The town’s cobbled streets are lined with restaurants and shops, and once per week, a farmers’ market. Quite keen on the idea of a day where you ‘do nothing’ (well, aside from paddling around at your leisure or reading a book on a sunlounger)? Make sure to visit from April to mid-September, when the heated indoor swimming pool and outdoor pool are open. Those of you who have young kids under your wing should also appreciate the kids’ club (for ages six to 12), which is open during the summer holidays for outdoor games and craft workshops. Inflatable play areas and pedal go-karts are another addition that’ll help to keep the kids busy.

Local attractions

There’s a very, very fine set of Loire Valley locations within driving distance of Camping La Citadelle. First up is Amboise (35 minutes’ drive), home to a 15th-century château with underground passages and the tomb of Leonardo da Vinci. Just a bit further away is Tours (50 minutes), known for its grand cathedral, 11th-century castle and Museum of Fine Arts. Blois (an hour and 10 minutes) packs in yet another cathedral and the slightly more unusual Robert-Houdin House of Magic, dedicated to magician Robert-Houdin. If you’re into your wine, don’t forget to stop by for a glass of red in Chinon (an hour); this should go down quite nicely after what can be quite a demanding stroll around the hilltop castle. If you fancy yourself quite the wildlife fan, perhaps you'll fancy the drive to ZooParc de Beauval (40 minutes). It has over 35,000 animals, including golden monkeys and giant pandas.
