  • Peaceful family-friendly site by the Creuse river in Descartes
  • Loches half an hour’s drive; Tours 50 minutes
  • Cycle route from the village; pétanque and play area
On the outskirts of the village of Descartes (named after its most famous son, the mathematician René), Camping Onlycamp La Roseraie is a great spot from which to explore the historic region of Touraine. The peaceful dog-friendly site sits close to the Creuse river – indeed, it’s a short five-minute walk to the local watersports base, where you can hire a canoe or kayak to explore this waterway. Dotted with tall trees that provide welcome shade during the warm summer months, La Roseraie is a magnet for families: while the kids make new friends (with their contemporaries) in the play area or (with the resident donkeys) in the paddock, grown-ups can embrace a relaxed French lifestyle on the pétanque court or on leisurely riverside walks or cycle rides. Speaking of pedalling, active types might like to have a go at the greenway departing from Descartes and going all the way to Tournon-Saint-Pierre (1 hour and 40 minutes by bike) to the south. Among the great pleasures of being in France are the delicious breakfast pastries, and in high season, guests at La Roseraie can place an order for flaky, buttery croissants and crusty baguettes; meanwhile the on-site shop stocks local products and ice cream, plus a range of hot and cold drinks. For anything else you might need, there are shops in Descartes, plus a supermarket a five-minute drive away. In addition to hot-water showers and a toilet block (including a space reserved for guests with reduced mobility), the site has a launderette and a washing-up area.

Power optional grass site

Liked Friendly staff; beautiful gardens next door; shaded tree pitches; sounds of nature; hot water for washing up. If facilities had been open I’d stay again.

Disliked Pool was closed; baker was on holiday so no morning croissants; only 2 showers and toilets open.

Power optional grass site

Liked The Site Location next to the river and the cycle tracks

Disliked The approach into the site is quite tight, however this is my 2nd visit so it's not that bad!! I realise there had been a lot of rain but the grass pitches required cutting as soon as it was possible

Reasonably priced site, large pitches

Power optional grass site

Liked Idyllic location near the river in easy walking to the centre of Descartes. Very secure with card access for vehicles and pedestrians including the gate to the riverside walk. Adjacent to small animal farm one one side and games area the other with beautifully kept municipal park accessed via the riverside walk. Facilities clean with hot water at all times. Bread available to order for following morning.

Disliked Cockerel very vocal from before dawn.

Local attractions

Delve into French history at Loches (half an hour’s drive), where the Royal City is a hilltop citadel. Among the sights to check out here are the imposing medieval tower, the Logis Royal castle (where Joan of Arc met Charles VII after the liberation of Orléans) and the Romanesque Church of Saint-Ours de Loches. If your kids are into science rather than thrill rides, a trip to Futuroscope (40 minutes) might make them very happy indeed. This leisure park with a focus on all things technological features robots, a time machine, upside-down houses and colourful and entertaining shows. Known for its medieval half-timbered buildings (especially around Place Plumereau), the historic city of Tours (50 minutes) stretches along the Loire river. It is also home to the vertiginous Cathédrale Saint-Gatien, built in Gothic style, and top art collections, like the one in the Museum of Fine Arts.
