How does fishing, kayaking and standup paddleboarding at a scenic beach sound… and all followed by a session in a steaming hot sauna? Splendid...? Then get on over to Vaalimaa Camping, a seaside site on the Gulf of Finland in the country’s south-west Kymenlaakso region. This peaceful place is within a short stroll of a forest, yet it’s also less than 10 minutes’ drive from the swish shopping of Zsar Outlet Village.
For stocking up on essentials instead of browsing boutiques, the village of Virojoki is a little closer at about a five-minute drive for banks, a post office and a pharmacy. Food supplies can be sourced at the grocery stores in the village, or on site at the kiosk that sells light meals, ciabatta bread, fresh pastries, soft drinks, sweets and ice cream.
Once the kids have eaten – and had a good old paddle around using the boats, kayaks and other watersports kit for hire – it’s perhaps time for the park’s playground (where there’s a swing, sandbox and slide), or to gather pals for games of volleyball or croquet.

Local attractions
All set for the alfresco life? After you’ve had a go at all the watersports on site, move on to a round of golf at the course 10 minutes’ drive away, set off for some fishing in the Langinkoski Imperial salmon water (40 minutes) or take off to Tykkimäki adventure park (an hour) for waterslides, pools and high ropes courses all in a forest setting.
You don’t have to get up into the branches to appreciate the trees and flowers at Arboretum Mustila (an hour and 10 minutes) – stick to ground level and follow the trails through the gardens. And there are more pretty wanders to take among the plants and waterfalls of Sapokka Water Garden (45 minutes).
If the weather’s decided it’s time to dive indoors for a while, perhaps turn attention to the Maritime Centre Vellamo (45 minutes), the Maretarium aquarium (45 minutes) or the heritage village around the 19th-century Verla mill museum (an hour and 20 minutes).

Liked: Lovely owner. Private sauna suite €20/hr. Very clean. Pitches available on the waterfront, beautiful scenery. Good EHU
