  • Peaceful, green and dog-friendly site in Frederiksværk
  • A 10-minute drive to the nearest beach; 25 minutes to Hillerød
  • Bike hire, canoe hire, tennis courts, play area and café on site
A handy town local and a peaceful green place to stay come together all in one fabulous package at Frederiksværk Camping, in the Zealand town of the same name. There’s plenty of lush greenery at this dog-friendly site, and located in the site’s backyard is the canal that flows through the town. Being in such a central location, of course, has its own perks. The site is within walking distance of pedestrian streets and horse-drawn carriage rides or city tours, depending on how you want to explore the town. There are shops and restaurants all around (including a supermarket approximately 200 metres away), and back on site you’ve got permission to light up a barbecue or a firepit for warmth and outdoor cooking – if you don’t fancy easy eats in the site’s café, that is. Tennis courts and a play area on site should keep you busy for a little while, and there’s bike hire and canoe hire on site to help you explore the surrounding area easily in whichever manner you wish. Other useful facilities on site included a launderette, a dog walking area and bathrooms that even stretch to hot tubs to soak in after a long day out.

Local attractions

When you want to get out on the water, rent a canoe directly from the site and take the trip through the town. The route goes all the way to Arresø, Denmark’s largest lake, which is 10 minutes’ drive away otherwise. Another route follows the canal to Roskilde Fjord (otherwise a 25-minute drive), where there are splendid beaches and rich birdlife. Other local beaches include Liseleje Strand (10 minutes’ drive) which also has a miniature golf course, and the dunes of Stængehus beach (15 minutes). While exploring the coast you could also stop in at Hundested (15 minutes) for the traditional boatyard and brewery, or Frederikssund (25 minutes) for fjord sailing trips. Away from the water, head east to Hillerød (25 minutes) to visit the 19th-century town museum and the 17th-century Frederiksborg Castle, or get your walking boots on for the forest trails of Gribskov (25 minutes), looking out for ancient relics as you ramble.
