On the outskirts of the Croatian resort of Sukošan (it’s a five-minute drive from the centre of town), family-friendly Camping Sukošan Beach sits just across the main Jadranska Magistrala road from a pebbly stretch looking across the water to the island of Pašman. Its location makes it a magnet for anyone looking for seaside relaxation – or seaside activities, for that matter, whether impromptu games of volley- or basketball on the beach or watersports. Several outfits in the vicinity hire jetskis (the nearest is a five-minute walk away) and pedal boats; if you’re keen to have a go at paddleboarding, though, you’ll have to drive (or take the bus, which stops right in front of the site) to Biograd na Moru (20 minutes) – that’s if you don’t have your own, of course. Do you have a fair complexion, burn easily in the sun and haven’t packed an umbrella? No worries: a nearby beach (10 minutes’ walk) backed and shaded by a dense pine grove might be the place for you. Well-behaved pets are welcome (and there is no additional charge for them), though dogs should be kept on a leash. A food shop on site sells a simple range of provisions for the grill, and there’s also a bakery and a stall selling fresh fruit and vegetables; however, you might prefer to sample freshly caught Croatian seafood at one of several waterfront restaurants in the area. Outdoor and indoor showers, separate toilet blocks for men and women, a washing-up area and a launderette complete the picture.

Liked: Sehr freundliche Besitzer, Sanitärcontainer wird jeden Tag gereinigt. Auch hundefreundlich, Tochter ist Tierärztin. Gutes Restaurant nur 100m entfernt, Supermarkt 50m. Nähe zu Zadar und zum Meer mit Beachbar

Disliked: Grober Schotterplatz, keine Wiese

Local attractions

The historic centre of Zadar (20 minutes’ drive) is dotted with ancient buildings, some in ruins (like the Roman Forum), others in a well-preserved state, like the medieval Cathedral of St. Anastasia, with its Romanesque architecture, or the 16th-century Duke’s Palace. Take a walk on the fortified city walls before heading to the Sea Organ monument to catch the sunset. With its pine and beech forests, Paklenica National Park (40 minutes) is a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts, who might be able to spot deer, wolves and assorted birds of prey, including peregrine falcons. Hiking trails take you past old settlements, streams and deep canyons, and there are also climbing routes for all levels of expertise. The landscape of Krka National Park (45 minutes) is renowned for dramatic waterfalls like Skradinski Buk. Several observation points overlook Visovačko jezero lake, in the centre of which is a small island with a Franciscan monastery.
