  • A short drive from Bay of Fundy whale-watching trips
  • Playground and social room with TV and games
Whale watching on your wishlist? Wend your way to Whale Cove Campground, a peaceful place a kilometre from the coast at the aptly-named Whale Cove. Boat trips to spot the big beasts may be the main attraction here (especially with several local operators offering discounts for guests), but they’re far from the only reason to settle in for a stay here. The campground’s central location on Digby Neck peninsula makes it a handy spot for all sorts of visits – its handy list of ’28 things to do’ covers beaches, birdwatching and the somewhat improbable Balancing Rock. Back at base, facilities include a playground, firepits and a cosy social room that’s open all day for guests to use its TV, DVD player and gaming console while drinking free cups of tea or coffee. There’s wifi access to help you plot your next move, a laundry room to deal with any dirt from your outings, and a sparklingly clean toilet block with family bathrooms and free hot showers. You’d be well advised to stock up on most supplies en route to Digby Neck, but there’s a stash of firewood and ice on sale at the campground’s shop, along with some local crafts.

Local attractions

Get your binoculars and camera prepped – Digby Neck has a rep for being one of the best places to spot whales in the whole of North America. All sorts of whales hang out here or pass by throughout the year, and you’re liable to spy other marine life too, including dolphins, turtles and basking sharks. It’ll take you half an hour or so drive to the harbour to board a boat, and there are frequently special rates to be had for Whale Cove guests. There’s some pretty great bird life around here, too – Brier Island, an hour’s drive south, is the best place to see them from the hiking paths or around ponds. And that’s not all that can be seen from the hiking paths: you may like to wander to Western Lighthouse, down at the tip of the peninsula, or ponder the existence of Balancing Rock (40 minutes away). Leisurely days nearby might take you to the beach at Sandy Cove (10 minutes away by car) or to Lake Midway Provincial Park (15 minutes) for picnics, canoeing or fishing. Foodies may also like to make the 20-minute pilgrimage to Digby to sample the seafood in the ‘scallop capital of the world’.
