It's free, quick and easy!
- Flanders site in the 108-hectare Keiheuvel recreation and nature park
- In the Kempen region 25 minutes' drive from the Dutch border
- Safari tent glamping with comfy beds and private verandahs
Safari tent stays… in a recreation and nature park? How splendid. Get prepped for outdoor days and comfy stays at Camping GT Keiheuvel, a comfy family-friendly site in the Kempen region deep in the Keiheuvel park.
You can be active for weeks in the site surrounds: the Keiheuvel recreation park covers 108 hectares of woodland and sand dunes, 60 of which is made up of nature reserves. The park is a top pick for Kempen cycling and hiking, and is also home to a petting zoo, an outdoor pool and several restaurants. Around the region, the site is just under 10 minutes’ drive from the Flanders region Antwerp province town of Balen, 25 minutes' drive from the Dutch border and an hour and 15 minutes east of Antwerp.
Closer to home, a trampoline park, a go-kart track and a miniature golf course are just outside Camping GT Keiheuvel; a paddling pool, playground, tennis court, table tennis, bike rental and free wifi are all to hand at your safari tent base.
Tents are well kitted out, with comfy beds as well as a mobile kitchen for cooking indoors or out on your private verandah. There’s also a fridge in each one – essential, as the site team says – for keeping cold your selection of crisp Belgian beers...

Local attractions
After your several days wildlife watching around the woodlands and sand dunes of the surrounding nature park, take to the car for an urban adventure or two in towns and cities around Belgium and the Netherlands.
Among the townie options around this part of Flanders are Geel (25 minutes’ drive), set on the Nete river and home to a clock museum, a lamp museum and – pic opportunity alert – a swathe of art nouveau graffiti on the walls of Saint-Alexis college. There’s also Eindhoven, 50 minutes away in the Netherlands: head here for the open-air Eindhoven Museum, art by Picasso and others at the Van Abbemuseum, and the De Ontdekfabriek/Discovery Factory kids’ museum at Strijp-S.
It’s well worth the hour and 15-minute drive to Antwerp for a day (or two), for yet more museums including the MoMu for fashion and threads fans; other must-dos include walks around the Grote Markt district or along the banks of the Scheldt, and family days among the sculptures in the Middelheim Museum.
