  • Family holiday park on a Phillip Island beachfront in Victoria
  • Penguin Parade 20 minutes’ drive; The Nobbies 25 minutes
  • Basketball ring, games room, jumping pillow; cafés five minutes’ walk
Put animal encounters on your to-do-list when you stay at Ingenia Holidays Phillip Island, and book the famed Penguin Parade, visit the Koala Conservation Reserve or stop by The Nobbies to see local fur seals in their natural habitat. At 90 minutes’ drive from Melbourne in Victoria, this family-friendly holiday park sits on the seafront in a natural bush setting. There’s lots to keep everyone happily busy, with easy access to the beach and an on-park basketball ring and games room. Younger guests are catered with a giant jumping pillow and adventure playground – and of course, there are myriad animal encounters to be had across the island. For evening downtime, head to the outdoor cinema or retire to the TV room for some leisurely catching up on your favourite series. If you’re going down the self-catering route, there’s a handy camp kitchen and electric barbecues. However, local shops, cafés and restaurants are only five minutes’ walk away, so you don’t have to travel too far if you want to leave the washing up to someone else for a change. Park amenities are well maintained and spotlessly clean, with first-aid facilities, a laundry with washing machines, dryers and clothes lines.

Local attractions

There aren’t too many places in the world where you can witness a Penguin Parade, but it’s an every-evening occurrence on Phillip Island. Home to the world’s largest Little penguin colony, sheltered Summerland Beach (20 minutes’ drive) is location of this very special wildlife encounter; book your space on the viewing boardwalk ahead of time to watch the birds waddle up the beach from the sea. Other animal experiences on Phillip Island include spotting comical koalas snoozing among the eucalyptus trees at the Koala Conservation Reserve, or seeing kangaroos, wallabies and emus wandering freely in their natural habitat at Phillip Island Wildlife Park (both 15 minutes). Head for the Nobbies Ocean Discovery Centre (25 minutes) to spy on the colony of fur seals basking on shoreline rocks, and get up closer to them on a two-hour cruise round the tiny islet of Seal Rocks. For an unusual perspective on the wildlife wonders of Phillip Island, take a helicopter flight over the wildlife reserves and beaches from the airport (five minutes) – some trips also take in the Australian Grand Prix Circuit.
