The Marsh: Pitches

General

  • Peaceful, rural Pembrokeshire site with valley views near Carmarthen
  • A half-hour drive to Oakwood Theme Park and Wild Lakes Wales
  • Fishing the Taf river on site; five minutes’ drive to shops and dining

Sitting in 25 acres of West Wales countryside and with great views of the surrounding valley, The Marsh is well-placed for exploring the Pembrokeshire coastline around Carmarthen – with multiple kids’ attractions within half an hour’s drive, this is a top-notch spot for families with active kids – and their dogs are welcome too. It’s also a cracking choice for anglers, as they can practice casting for salmon, sea trout and bass amid a glorious backdrop of birdsong along the Taf river (extra cost).

If you’re looking for a relaxing day on site, have a potter along its nature trails or wander down to the Taf for a waterside stroll. To up the pace a bit, head to the seaside town of Tenby (half an hour’s drive) for splashing around in the sea and boat trips to Caldey Island, or go sailing and windsurfing in Saundersfoot (25 minutes).

Back on site, there’s a variety of grass pitches (some uneven and unmown) and simple facilities stretch to a washing-up area, a portaloo and ice-pack freezing to keep barbecue goodies fresh.

Pick up basics in the village of St Clears – where you can also down a caffeine fix – or do bigger shops in Laugharne (both five minutes), home to a ruined castle and displays in the Dylan Thomas Writing Shed. If you prefer, you could dodge the cooking completely and pick up fish and chips to eat back at camp or try a couple of Pembrokeshire brews in a local pub.

Please note

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

No electric barbecues allowed.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

It’s a small well spaced out site with electric hookup if required. There are views from the elevated pitches and walks that extend to a coastal pathway. Ideally sited a short drive from Pendine Sands and other local tourist attractions. It is a dog friendly site and the owner can often be seen training working dogs in the adjacent fields. In summary, a friendly well tended site that we will definitely visit again.

A basic but beautiful campsite, friendly owner, plenty of space.09/05/2022

A beautiful campsite with a variety of natural habitats and plenty of space for each tent.
We were a bit concerned about the proximity to the road on arrival, but the owner said that the traffic would die down from 8pm and it did.
The campsite is called The Marsh for a reason - if you want to camp where there's most space by the reeds, you might want to take insect repellent with you.
The owner is very friendly and accommodating - and even asked us if we wanted to join him and a friend shooting a few clay pigeons. He was happy for us to walk around the whole site and enjoy the riverside and pond.
The facilities are very basic - a portaloo, drinking water tap and bins for waste.

    Disliked:

The location was excellent. Central to lots of little beautiful towns and villages with its own little estuary running at the back of the campsite a 5 minute walk away. Huw and his partner were brilliant throughout our trip. We were greeted with fresh eggs from the chickens and he was full of information for us about where to spend out days. The campsite was only small which was perfect as it meant everyone had their own space and no one felt too close or squashed in. There was 2 enclosed areas that we could let our dogs off their leads and have a good run around. There is a couple of friendly cows on site who love it when you walk down and they will follow you up and down inside there pen. Overall my partner and I absolutely loved this campsite and are already making arrangements to come back again. Amazingly for a campsite the phone signal was better than I got at home so having no wifi wasn’t an issue

    Disliked:

There was nothing to dislike about the campsite.

Local attractions

What a spot for family holidays. You can keep the kids going all day with animal encounters at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (20 minutes’ drive), or challenge them to mini-golf games and paintball fights at Heatherton Leisure Park. With adrenaline-busting rollercoaster and thrill rides, Oakwood Theme Park (both half an hour) is another action-packed day trip for active families.

Rather be out in the water? There’s a wave pool and high-impact flume rides at Blue Lagoon Water Park (25 minutes), or you can book family wakeboarding lessons at Wild Lakes Wales. On sunny days, jump in the car and head for Saundersfoot (both half an hour) beaches for some downtime messing about in the waves.

To slow things down a bit, the National Botanic Garden of Wales (20 minutes) offers lots of strolls in peaceful landscapes and rare plants in a Norman Foster-designed glasshouse, or you can up the cultural element of your Wales break with a guided tour of majestic Pembroke Castle (35 minutes), perched on rocks above the sea.
