General

  • Peaceful rural campsite in open countryside on an Anglesey farm
  • A 15-minute drive to Trearddur Bay beach; 45 minutes from Snowdonia
  • Neolithic tombs and livestock on site; close to walks, shops and a pub

Well, history aficionados, here’s one for you. Presaddfed is a quiet and remote wild campsite – set next to the remains of ancient Neolithic chamber tombs. And nature lovers gather round too, because this site is also close to woodland walks where you might – just might – get to spot red squirrels.

As this family-friendly spot is based on a secluded working farm near Bodedern on Anglesey, it’s also a given that you’ll wake up to an abundance of birdsong and livestock grazing in the next-door fields.

Bodedern village (20 minutes’ walk) has a renowned butcher’s shop, a handy late-opening convenience store and a pub. If you’d like to explore further afield, jump in the car and you can be paddling in the sea at Trearddur Bay beach in 15 minutes, or hiking in Snowdonia in 45 minutes.

Want to try something new? There’s clay pigeon shooting (five minutes’ walk) close by on Saturday and Wednesday, and adrenaline-thumping zipwires over water at Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (40 minutes’ drive).

Back at base, the well-equipped shower block has four private shower rooms, loos and dish-washing facilities; otherwise you’re pretty much left to your own devices. There’s only one rule: this is a peaceful spot and the owners would like to keep it that way, so please, no loud noise after 9pm.

Stayed for the first time at this site end of August for 2 nights in tent, no electric hook up.
Lovely site, very friendly, helpful owner.
Peaceful location, short drive to great beaches.
Firepits available and you can buy bags of logs on site.
Shop sells sweets and beers, with power points to charge your phone there.
Toilets and shower block very clean, the shower was great, plently of hot water.
We don't camp very often but will make a point of returning to this site next year.

We camped twice this year. We will be back many times in the future. Thanks to mark and the girls see you soon have a nice rest ;)

In many ways a perfect site. The shower and toilets are in good condition (although not always as clean as previous reviews I'd read), the kiosk sells essentials including hot drinks and alcohol, staff and owner friendly and helpful. The layout enabled us to be able to pitch our tents close together and the space in the middle of the field meant the children could play safely with a sense of freedom. Availability of fire pits and wood were an added bonus.

    Disliked:

Perhaps it was our misunderstanding of a quiet site but being asked to quiten our children on the first night (after a long day and a sleep in the car) left us feeling self-conscious and uncomfortable. On subsequent nights, even once the children were asleep, we felt we couldn't sit round the fire with a drink, chatting. It rather spoilt our holiday.

We stayed at this site for the first time this week, and loved it. It is a simple site, that is spotlessly clean. The tents are pitched in a way that gives children lots of space to play in a good sized grass area. We opted to be along the fence and so away from the bigger play area. It is a quieter site, children are able to run and play freely until 9.30 and then there is a strict 'quite down' police, we appreciated this. Each tent is given a fire pit (wood available to buy but you can bring your own) us like many people were sat quietly chatting and playing cards until late. Lack of light pollution made the sky amazing to look at whilst we were there and lack of road noise made it very tranquil. There are 4 large shower rooms with toilets in, which are great if you have younger children with you and a separate toilet block with 4 toilets ( this is a new addition this season) There is a small shop open in the mornings for coffee and bits and then again in the evening, with soft drinks, some beers, cider and snacks. The owners were truly lovely and did all they could to make sure everybody had a good stay.

    Disliked:

A little more signage on the road would be good, it says Shooting, but not camping.

Local attractions

If you’ve got a thing for high-action activities, you’ll find yourself with a fair few options. Horse riding can be tracked down in around 20 minutes, but if you’d rather set out to see what’s happening out on the big blue, RIB rides (25 minutes’ drive) and coasteering (15 minutes) are likely to open up a can of wildlife spotting and more adrenaline.

Things are just as splendid up on the clifftops along the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path (10 minutes) – over the 130 miles, you might pass sea arches, sand dunes and salt marsh, but it's up to you how far you want to go. Stop to rummage through the rockpools at Trearddur Bay beach (15 minutes), and cool off with a dip if you've worked up a sweat on your hike.

If you’re feeling like a quieter day, there’s a golf course (15 minutes) for peaceful days potting holes or the Ucheldre Centre (15 minutes) runs arts and crafts events for the creative minded among you.

Must see

  • Caernarfon Castle (22.3 kilometres)
  • Beaumaris Castle (26.1 kilometres)
  • Penrhyn Castle (29.0 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Plas Newydd Country House and Gardens (20.2 kilometres)
