  • Back-to-basics site on the edge of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia)
  • On a working farm half an hour's drive from Zip World Penrhyn Quarry
  • Direct access to the Llanberis Path and Snowdown Ranger Path
Looking for a simple site that can be used as a base camp for summiting Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon)? Consider Camping in Llanberis, a working farm site on the north-western fringes of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia). It has direct access to the Llanberis Path and the Snowdon Ranger Path, two routes (of varying difficulties) that lead to the summit of the tallest mountain in Wales. Suited to the outdoorsy type who doesn’t expect any luxury facilities, this is a back-to-basics spot with sheep nearby and some amenities including a toilet block with coin-operated hot showers, a washing-up corner, a fridge, freezer and microwave, and phone-charging plugs. According to demand and the season, there's also sometimes a food van selling breakfast baps in the morning and burgers and loaded fries in the evening (all to be pre-ordered at the reception), plus craft beers. The on-site team is happy to hand over some friendly local knowledge and advice. There’s no need to book or find the car parks for Yr Wyddfa here; in addition, the Pen y Pass paths are also easily accessible by car or a Sherpa bus. Camping in Llanberis is just a 10-minute stroll from Llanberis, where there are shops, restaurants, cafés and attractions like the Llanberis Lake Railway. It’s a 25-minute walk to the Snowdon Mountain Railway station for those who don’t want to make the climb to the summit. It’s also a great base camp for those attending running events like Ultra-Trail Snowdonia and the Snowdon Marathon. The Snowdonia Slate Trail, a long-distance path stretching for 83 miles, is a 15-minute drive away.

What customers say

Great views & location for Snowdonia, short walk to Llanberis. Staff are a legend, love the 'pick your own' pitch & food van. Facilities are decent, though showers cost and it's a bit hilly. Sheep are a sweet, if sometimes messy, addition.

Liked Location is great. Walking distance from town. Burger van on site plus plug sockets available

Disliked Incredibly hilly and long walk to the toilets
Had to put £1 coin in for a shower, I know this is stated when booking but for £26 a night I’m not sure what I’m paying for ?

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We’re pleased you enjoyed our location and on-site burger van.

We would, however, like to clarify a couple of points regarding your comments. Guests choose their own pitch upon arrival, so you are not allocated a pitch a long distance from the facilities. Our toilet and shower facilities are centrally located, and guests are free to choose a pitch that suits their preferences. The site itself is naturally hilly, which is unfortunately something we cannot change. Having said this there are plenty of flat pitches to be found!

Regarding the £1 shower charge and your comment about “what you’re paying for” at £16 per night, we feel it is important to put this into perspective. Running a campsite involves substantial and continually increasing costs, including staff wages, electricity, gas, waste disposal, maintenance, insurance, land rental costs, VAT, council/business rates and other taxation, as well as the ongoing upkeep and future plans to improve the site and its facilities.

The £1 shower charge is clearly stated at the time of booking, so guests are aware of this additional cost before arrival. We appreciate that everyone has different expectations of value, but we do feel it is important to recognise that the nightly pitch fee has to contribute towards the considerable costs involved in operating and maintaining the site.

We genuinely welcome constructive feedback and will always consider where improvements can be made. We’re pleased there were aspects of your stay that you enjoyed, and we wish you all the best for your future travels.

Liked Great spot, awesome views and a friendly team. Facilities are as advitised. Toilets were clean enough when and wash stations were the standard thing you expect. Food van was great and the views were amazing. We used as a basecamp to take the kids up snowdon and were not dissapointed.

Disliked The whole site is on a slop, so the few spots that are flat are busy.

The field near the shower and toilet block doesn't allow you to bring your car next to your tent. The other fields where it's allowed are far from the facility.

Liked We liked the location of the camping site.

Disliked The hot water wasn't working which meant we couldn't wash dishes or clean our hands. This is a hygiene and health and safety concern.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We’re sorry that the intermittent hot water issue affected your stay. The hot water was unfortunately cutting out intermittently on Sunday and we resolved the issue as soon as we were made aware of it.

What was particularly frustrating for us was that nobody reported the problem to reception or a member of staff. In fact, a member of our team became aware of it only after overhearing customers 'discussing' it amongst themselves directly outside reception, where a member of staff had been present constantly from 7:30am until gone 11:30pm. A member of staff was also in the burger van right next to them. Had we been told directly, we could have investigated and resolved the issue sooner.

We completely understand the importance of having hot water available for hygiene purposes, and we’re sorry for the inconvenience caused. We do provide a kettle in the drying room, which could have provided a temporary solution.

We do appreciate your feedback and will continue to do everything we can to respond quickly when problems are brought to our attention.

From the manager: Boiler error on Saturday evening meant no hot water for a couple of hours.

We do supply hot water in washing up and hand wash basins.

Local attractions

If you want to balance your outdoorsy pursuit with a bit of history, head to Caernarfon (20 minutes’ drive), where a fortress built by Edward I in the late 13th century sits where the river Seiont flows into the Menai Strait. Across the Seiont is a large green area with a skatepark and a waterfront path. Lined with independent kiosks, Garth Pier in Bangor (half an hour) stretches halfway across the Menai Strait, making the island of Anglesey seem so close you could almost touch it. There are more views of Anglesey from the Roman Camp, an area of woodland and lawns at the top of a hill overlooking the city. Those who want more thrills besides summiting Yr Wyddfa should visit Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (half an hour), where they can take a vertiginous flight across the lake of a disused quarry on what is said to be the world’s fastest zipwire. If you’re brave enough to keep your eyes open, you might catch a glimpse of the Welsh coastline while you’re in mid-air.
