A trip to north Wales can mean many things… for some it’s all about the action-packed adventures, while for others it’s more of a quiet-time thing, allowing some hours for activities like fishing, photography or art. Whichever of these you’ve got in mind (or perhaps a mix of both), you’ll be in a good location at Glanllyn - Lakeside Caravan and Camping Park. This Gwynedd site is right on the shores of Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid), with its own private pebbly stretch of beach where you're welcome to go wild swimming. For an additional fee, grab permits for fishing permit or launching your own paddleboarding, kayaking or windsurfing equipment. Staying at such a strategic spot in the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park also means that you’ll have access to lots more activities in the surroundings too, from hikes and mountain bike outings to gorge walking, ziplining and cave adventures. Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is the big climb, about an hour’s drive away, but there are several other mountains closer by that also offer up good challenges – take a look at Arenig Fawr or Aran Benllyn. Of course that lakeside location is a fabulous one for the serenity-seekers too – the park stretches out over 16 acres of tree-lined level parkland, so there’s plenty of space to soak up those stunning views towards the surrounding hills and mountains. All the essential facilities are covered here, including a launderette, a small food shop, a washing-up area, showers and toilets – plus a play area for any kids you haven’t yet worn out. Barbecue and campfire cooking is permitted, and you’ll be able to pick up wood-fired pizzas on busy weekends.

Liked A nice tidy well thought out site with its own beach onto the lake, the wee shop has the everyday essentials that you always seem to forget to pack. The shower block and toilets are absolutely immaculate. It is all very well run and efficient. Tbh we have been many times in the past and will be back again.

Liked Site was so well looked after. Superb showers, washing up area and bins. Not one speck of dust anywhere!
Site owner dealt with minor issue immediately and all staff were so friendly. Great to have small shop on site - the coffee was excellent.
The scenery was spectacular and we swam in the lake every day, clear water, quiet, friendly ducks!! The location cannot be beaten.
Dogs are welcome and the fenced dog paddock was ideal.
We will be back.

Local attractions

There are plenty of ways to get a real hit of adrenaline around here – options for high-octane activities include rafting from the National White Water Centre (15 minutes’ drive), world-class mountain bike trails at Coed y Brenin Forest Park (half an hour) and ziplines or underground adventure trails at Zip World Llechwedd (45 minutes). Successfully scaling Yr Wyddfa (aka Mount Snowdon; an hour) provides a thrill too, whether you choose to make your way up one of the footpaths or ride up on the railway. Another lovely walk in the area takes you to Pistyll Rhaeadr (45 minutes), the UK's tallest single-drop waterfall. For gentler days out, take a trip on Bala Lake Railway (five minutes’ drive) or head towards the coast to visit Barmouth beach (40 minutes), pretty Italianate village Portmeirion (45 minutes) and Harlech Castle (50 minutes).
