Ty Mawr Holiday Park: Splendid views

General

  • Busy family park within easy reach of Colwyn Bay and Rhyl
  • Close to the beach at Abergele
  • Pool, playground, bar, restaurant and takeaway

Thrills in Rhyl or getting out to play in Colwyn Bay: both are in easy reach of Ty Mawr Holiday Park on the north Wales coast – along with gorgeous beaches, market towns, charismatic castles, and the inspiring scenery of the Welsh mountains.

This buzzing, family-oriented park is great for kids: they’ll spend hours whizzing down the flume into the indoor pool and running around the large outdoor playground, and can join Sparky the rabbit and his Krew in the free kids’ clubs for all ages. There are also plenty of organised sports activities on offer.

In the evenings, the whole family can enjoy a knees-up at the all-singing, all-dancing entertainment bar, where live bands and cabaret make a regular appearance, as well as fun theme nights and competitions.

The various food options on site include plenty of takeaway choices at the Rendezvous diner and the Boathouse bar and restaurant.

Modern amenities include toilets, showers and heated changing areas.

On arrival we was greeted by a coded gate after being emailed to go straight to our allocated pitch. We wasn’t given a code in the email etc.. A lady let us in. We went to our pitch and walked up to reception, arriving at reception door at 17:55 it was locked, it should of closed at 18:00. After knocking a woman came to the door stuffed us our entertainment passes at the door and said “we open again at 9am”.. Back to the pitch where it very quickly became apparent we was surrounded by gypsy travellers. Within the first 5 minutes their children were trying to steal our children’s toys. We was then told that up until that morning there was 25 other van loads of travellers “all stealing and causing mayhem”. We was pitched right next to the dog park, we don’t have a dog! Each morning being woken to dogs barking and throughout the day, enthusiastic dog owners cheering on their dogs to jump the obstacles and chatting between themselves. Why pitch us next to a dog park when on booking we was asked if we had dogs and we stated we did not? First morning we go to the pool to find out swimming times as there is no signs etc to give any indication and well lets face it the receptionist wanted a early dart the day we landed so we couldn’t ask. We went swimming and don’t think your child can go on the slide, you cant go with your child, you can’t wait at the bottom for your child they must be able to swim a width on there own after popping out the slide. This wasn’t a problem but i can imagine it leaves alot of kids disappointed after looking at the pictures before arriving. Pool water is freezing, presuming that is to get people to not stay in too long because if everyone at that park went swimming at once it would be chaos. The showers at the pool are open showers right next to the pool, no private showers and if more than 3 showers are turns on at once then the pressure drops out and each shower becomes a dribble, presuming the lack of private showers is another ploy to get people to go back to their blocks for showers instead of staying at the pool. Lockers charge 20p to use.
£4.50 for a pint at the bar, Chip shop is £4 for a pie.. you get the gist. Travellers constantly driving around in circles around the pitches with their eyes all over everyones stuff, literally just driving around in circles. They’re always beeping their horns throughout the day and night. Security does a lap of the pitches once a night so at least for 30 seconds your stuff if safe as he drives past. I’ve never been camping and felt like we can’t leave our chairs out without them being pinched, everything was being locked in the van every time we went anywhere. Travellers driving to the toilet blocks through the pitches all day long, not slow either! I don’t know where they’re getting their fuel from to afford to constantly be driving around in their cars. We was sat outside the back of our awning with a fire on and a drink, relaxing when a travellers toddler came running over at 21:30, he couldn’t speak, he tried stealing out kids football and when told no he just stood there, i told him to go back to his mummy he just stood there some more, eventually he ran off. Toilets were often blocked, toilet blocks where regularly flooded. Kids running in kicking the toilet doors, blocking sinks and letting the tap run to flood the place. This place is very commercial, all the pitches are very close together leaving no space for the kids to play once everyone arrives Friday afternoon. All in all we’ve had more fun parked up in the middle of a field with just a shower block than we did here. We wouldn’t recommend and we wouldn’t return.

Good location, facilities good with shop, bar and takeaway. Didn’t get chance to try the pool but looked good. Loads of facilities for families with play area and football pitch. Pitch quite big. Overall the site is mostly clean and staff on reception friendly.

    Disliked:

Very windy site, close to the sea front with little protection. Toilets and showers for the camping field very average, located in modular buildings and capacity was ok when we stayed but site only half full. Would be an issue when full. Bizarre rule on awnings and tents, can put an awning up but not a stand alone tent or shelter next to the camper, but both use same amount of space!

Disrespectful fellow campers!! Arrived in The Meadows site with our Motorhome and there was a large police presence all wearing stab vests. We weren’t warned that there was an ongoing situation with travellers when we checked in!
Went back to reception to be told us being dealt with, we were staying fir several nights so thought we would wait it out to see if it gets dealt with.
The group of travellers left after a few hours but after that we weren’t sure which fellow campers were travellers as it didn’t improve the situation on the meadows.
There was constantly the same people driving around at low speed in circles of the meadow day and night, music so load it sounded like it was in our Motorhome. Didn’t want the toilet if shower facilities as other guests had left them so disgusting, (not flushing toilets, toilet floor swimming with god knows what!! etc)
Debris scattered across site, children running around/playing ball till the early hours of the morning) Security were present in the gates to try to stop anymore travellers from entering but we’re turning a blind eye to the unsociable guests already present.
