  • Luxury family-friendly cabins in a quiet Perthshire location
  • Half an hour’s drive to Blairgowrie or Pitlochry; on the Cateran Trail
  • Food shop and pub a short walk away; woodland walks locally
This is the sort of place that meshes together ancient beauty of the Scottish landscapes with modern home comforts - the kind of spot for quality time, starting a new creative venture or rekindling an old friendship, so the owners of Cateran Rest say. It’s easy to see why: these luxury cabins are in a quiet Perthshire location, surrounded by lush green grass, woodlands with thick trunks and a small stream. When you do go out, it might be to take a morning stroll around the woodlands or for a longer, more daring venture onto the historic Cateran Trail which runs past the site and follows a path once used by cattle raiders. One thing’s for sure, this area isn’t short on hiking and cycling routes, and there’s plenty more a short drive north in Cairngorms National Park. After all that time in the outdoors, feel free to pick up some nibbles and a bottle of red from the well-stocked shop in Kirkmichael (20 minutes’ walk) before retiring to your luxury cabin. There’s a balcony if you feel like spying on wildlife and on any chillier nights, there’s a logburner that should warm the cockles and large windows providing views of the outside. If you can’t quite be bothered with chopping and dicing one night, Kirkmichael has a pub and there are restaurants in the surrounding villages a short drive away. Or you might want to eat out while you’re visiting Blairgowrie or Pitlochry (both half an hour’s drive). Pitlochry is a fine place for golfing and fishing, by the way, if those are your sort of pastimes.

Local attractions

Where to begin your Perthshire adventures? Blairgowrie (half an hour’s drive) is a wise place to start. You could take yourself off on a hike between the sandy beaches that stretch out from Blairgowrie Beach, have a browse of the Wee Scottish Gallery or ready your game face for the historic golf course. If you’re keen on your outdoor sports, Glenshee (an hour) is worth the journey. In fact, there’s everything from skiing trails to mountain biking routes and the slightly more adrenaline-inducing abseiling, hang gliding and paragliding. Perhaps you’re quite interested in taking in some ancient sites too. Pitlochry (half an hour) is surrounded by stone circles and standing stones, including the Dunfallandy Stone (half an hour). There’s plenty of hill walking, golfing, cycling, bungee jumping and quad biking in or around the town too. After all that, you might want to call it a day and retire into one of the town’s pubs or visit the historic Blair Athol Distillery (half an hour) to assess their whisky offerings.

#1 2 bedroom cabin

Liked: We loved the location perfect for walking, watching bird life and just relaxing especially on the large decking area where you can sit and watch the wildlife on your doorstep, the cabin was roomy enough for our party of three but cosy for a night in although the abundance of walks meant staying in was the last thing you want to do. The overall facilities are of a high standard it was clean and fresh on arrival and won’t think twice about booking the cabin again

Disliked: Nothing to dislike
