  • Highlands and Islands campsite five minutes’ drive from Spean Bridge
  • Nevis Range Mountain Resort 10 minutes’ drive; Fort William 20 minutes
  • Brewery with a bottle shop and self-serve coffee; food on weekends
Heading for the Highlands and Islands? Then you should be pleased to hear about Glen Spean Camping, a friendly site with a family atmosphere half a mile east of Spean Bridge. It might be simple – facilities include a small kitchen, toilets, showers, sinks with drinking-water taps and picnic benches – but the views to the Grey Corries and Aonach Mòr in the Nevis Range are spectacular. The site is just off the A86, which eventually leads to the Isle of Skye or Inverness; locally it’s 10 minutes’ drive from Aonach Mòr and hiking or mountain biking at the Nevis Range Mountain Resort. The walking hub of Fort William and gorgeous Loch Linnhe are just a 20-minute drive away from the site, and if you don’t fancy driving to Fort William, you can catch handy buses from Spean Bridge (five minutes’ drive/15 minutes’ walk). Back on site, there is a brewery with a bottle shop running events on some evenings; it’s open on Fridays and weekends, as well as the occasional Thursday. Self-service coffees and teas are provided for those of you who would like a morning or afternoon brew (just put a couple of coins in the jar for payment), and there’s also food available on weekends from a variety of food trucks.

What customers say

Brilliant mountain views, top staff & a chill vibe get a lot of love. The brewery and handy communal kitchen are a big plus. Facilities are clean & work well, though basic. "Wild camping" appeal is a hit, but watch out for the rough track and late-night fire noise.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked There was a really well equiped shared kitchen for campers to use. It is also the only campsite I've ever stayed in with an onside brewery, which is an extremely welcome addition.

Unpowered grass campervan site

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked Amazing views of mountains and sheep in field next door. Good facilities provided, eg kitchen hut with kettle, two hot plates, coffee machine with pods provided, fridge, charging, microwave etc. Communal fire pit, bbq and seating area.

Disliked Shame its abused by people not booked/paid, where were many. They over filled the site on the Friday night we were there, making it unpleasant but were gone early before the owner showed up. I would not stay there at the weekend for this reason. One composting toilet was full. Needs a sink separate from the washing up for hand washing and bathroom type things eg toothpaste spitting. On site brewery is not a tap room but there is a shop, which should be reception and the gate coded.

Local attractions

The Nevis Range Mountain Resort (10 minutes’ drive) may be the first port of call for outdoor adventurers; it offers challenging downhill mountain biking as well as ziplines and obstacle courses for families. You can also take the mountain gondola right up to the summit of Aonach Mòr for scenic hikes and stunning views over to Ben Nevis. Should you need anything related to walking, biking or climbing, you’ll be able to source it in the shops of Fort William (20 minutes), where you can also have a poke around the Jacobite weaponry and period costumes in the West Highland Museum. If sampling whisky is more your style, Ben Nevis Distillery is open for tours of its stills and tasting sessions. Other attractions to put on your sightseeing schedule include Neptune’s Staircase (15 minutes), a flight of eight locks on the scenic Caledonian Canal, and the handsome Glenfinnan Viaduct (40 minutes), as seen in the Harry Potter film franchise. At Glenfinnan, you can also walk down to the lochside Glenfinnan Monument, built at the head of Loch Shiel to celebrate the arrival of Bonnie Price Charlie on Scottish shores in 1745.
