Heading for the Highlands and Islands? Then you should be pleased to hear about Glen Spean Camping, a friendly site with a family atmosphere half a mile east of Spean Bridge. It might be simple – facilities include a small kitchen, toilets, showers, sinks with drinking-water taps and picnic benches – but the views to the Grey Corries and Aonach Mòr in the Nevis Range are spectacular. The site is just off the A86, which eventually leads to the Isle of Skye or Inverness; locally it’s 10 minutes’ drive from Aonach Mòr and hiking or mountain biking at the Nevis Range Mountain Resort. The walking hub of Fort William and gorgeous Loch Linnhe are just a 20-minute drive away from the site, and if you don’t fancy driving to Fort William, you can catch handy buses from Spean Bridge (five minutes’ drive/15 minutes’ walk). Back on site, there is a brewery with a bottle shop running events on some evenings; it’s open on Fridays and weekends, as well as the occasional Thursday. Self-service coffees and teas are provided for those of you who would like a morning or afternoon brew (just put a couple of coins in the jar for payment), and there’s also food available on weekends from a variety of food trucks.

Great mountain views & a chill vibe. Guests love the shared kitchen, fire pits & brewery. Facilities are basic but clean. Flexible arrival/departure is handy. Wet access road can be tricky. Joe's a legend!

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked Quirky wee campsite with good facilities, friendly staff and great views over to the hills.
We were unable to access the camping field in our camper due to heavy rainfall turning the field entrance into a bog. This is our only reason for knocking off a star.
Joe was very accommodating and let us pitch up beside the workshop instead of having to find another site at short notice which was much appreciated.
The onsite brewery is extremely handy too!
We will definitely return sometime. Hopefully when its dry!

Disliked The entrance to the field. However we appreciate this was due to the weather. Digging it out and putting in compacted gravel at the field entrance could be an option to avoid this in the future.

Liked Had a great time and found the campsite exactly as described.
Toilets were good and the showers were warm.
Would defiantly recommend this site as the beer is good and the owners friendly.

Liked Fantastic and wonderfully sized site, nice setup and a great friendly host Joe who couldn't have done more and took care of things before we even realised they needed taking care of. Probably the best stay we've had at a campsite!
Sitting by the fire and taking in the magnificent view were some of the most memorable evenings we've had this year.

Disliked Can't think of anything. It surpassed our expectations :-)

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked There was a really well equiped shared kitchen for campers to use. It is also the only campsite I've ever stayed in with an onside brewery, which is an extremely welcome addition.

Liked Really nice friendly campsite, they also have a brewery on site (2 min walk from camping). The common kitchen area was really handy to have boiling water/microwave

Local attractions

The Nevis Range Mountain Resort (10 minutes’ drive) may be the first port of call for outdoor adventurers; it offers challenging downhill mountain biking as well as ziplines and obstacle courses for families. You can also take the mountain gondola right up to the summit of Aonach Mòr for scenic hikes and stunning views over to Ben Nevis. Should you need anything related to walking, biking or climbing, you’ll be able to source it in the shops of Fort William (20 minutes), where you can also have a poke around the Jacobite weaponry and period costumes in the West Highland Museum. If sampling whisky is more your style, Ben Nevis Distillery is open for tours of its stills and tasting sessions. Other attractions to put on your sightseeing schedule include Neptune’s Staircase (15 minutes), a flight of eight locks on the scenic Caledonian Canal, and the handsome Glenfinnan Viaduct (40 minutes), as seen in the Harry Potter film franchise. At Glenfinnan, you can also walk down to the lochside Glenfinnan Monument, built at the head of Loch Shiel to celebrate the arrival of Bonnie Price Charlie on Scottish shores in 1745.
