  • Smart adults-only shepherd's huts close to the village of Coldingham
  • Scuba diving and wildlife-spotting boat trips in five minutes' drive
  • Half an hour's walk from the beach; pubs and shop 10 minutes away
Seeking a splendid location for a rural retreat? With views out towards the coast over fields and plenty of space around the lawned paddock from which to admire them, Templehall Shepherd's Huts is a smasher of a spot. This relaxed adults-only site is in Berwickshire, just outside the village of Coldingham and around a five-minute drive from both Eyemouth and the A1. But it’s not just excellent for its easy access – it’s a peaceful place too for folk who’d like to settle in on the outdoor tables and accompany the sea views with a few drinks or dinner cooked on the barbecue. If it’s not the right weather for eating alfresco, take the 10-minute walk into the village for a pub dinner or takeaway fish and chips, or to pick up supplies for the little kitchen in your shepherd’s hut (which has a mini oven and hob, a kettle, a Nespresso coffee machine and a good handful of handy utensils). Each smart space also has a comfy bed made up with top-notch linen, plus a table and chairs, a TV and a well-equipped shower room with a composting toilet. A logburner ensures things stay nice and cosy, even on those cooler nights. Once you’ve strolled up to Coldingham to look around the conservation village, keep on going and you’ll get to the beach in about 20 minutes or so for coastal wanders, sandy days and surf lessons. Diving and nature walks around St Abb’s Head are about a five-minute drive away.

Local attractions

Don’t miss the cracking Coldingham beach with its café and surf school while on a hol here – it’s around half an hour’s walk from the park. St Abb’s Head National Nature Reserve (five minutes’ drive) is also a prime place for a stroll while soaking up seaside scenery. Got an urge to get in or on the water? Set off on a scuba-diving trip from St Abb’s Head, or bag yourself a seat on a wildlife-spotting boat tour from Eyemouth (five minutes). A golf club is around this seaside settlement for when you’d rather get out on the green. For indoor activities, take a jaunt to the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum (20 minutes) or potter around Paxton House (20 minutes), a Palladian pad where fishing and boat trips are also possible. After more architecturally themed days out? Bound over to Berwick-upon-Tweed( 20 minutes) for the castle and museums, making sure to factor in some time for a lope along the Lowry Trail to learn more about the famed painter it’s named after, before exploring Edinburgh’s masses of historical buildings (an hour).

The Hawthorn shepherd's hut

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay in one of the beautiful Shepherds Huts. It was so cozy, clean & well thought out. Everything was provided from a big comfy bed, with fresh pillows & bedding, to lovely fluffy towels. There were beautiful hand painted Glasses & handmade toiletries to use, which we purchased from the owners. The site was beautifully maintained & the views were stunning.

The Hawthorn shepherd's hut

Liked: The space around the hut was excellent with great views. Nobody bothered us while we were enjoying our stay. The hut itself was a really nice experience and was laid out really well. Both Jeanette and Andrew were perfect hosts. They also supplied a selection of fresh produce and eggs for purchase.

Disliked: The dry toilet was a challenge and there was a slight issue with the hot water to the shower.
