  • Well-equipped holiday park among Ayr's 30+ castles
  • Indoor pool, solarium, wildlife trails and kids' clubs for ages 4-15
  • Entertainment venue, bar-restaurant and fish and chip shop
Hmmm, here’s a compelling conundrum for someone at Sundrum Castle Holiday Park: with more than 30 cracking castles tucked into the landscape around Ayr, which on earth should you visit first? And even if you stay on site, it’s decisions, decisions thanks to the packed programme of entertainment and activities at all hours of the day. Ditherers, you have been warned. Daytime choices include a splash about on the flume at the indoor pool, a relaxing session in the solarium, 10-pin bowling, a round of crazy golf, a deerstalking stroll around the wildlife trails, or a game of five-a-side or basketball. For kids, there’s a mind-boggling selection of fun sessions in the kids’ clubs for ages four to 15. As night falls, take your pick of competitions, live music, cabaret, dancing and comedy in the on-site entertainment venue. As for food, the Tam O’Shanter bar-restaurant has a comprehensive set of food and drink options including freshly brewed Costa Coffee, or you could just grab a bite from the fish and chip shop. So, if you’re after an unspoilt country setting close to fab beaches and some of Scotland’s top tourist attractions, Sundrum Castle Holiday Park may well be the perfect spot. (Phew, at least that's one decision made…)

Liked: Quietest parkdean we've ever stayed at!! level pitch, very very friendly staff. Travellers staying on the site were lovely - often reading reviews about travellers staying at Parkdean sites and being a problem- not in our experience. Polite , respectful, quiet, no issues. Kushti bok!

Disliked: Sadly it is very isolated if you have no means to leave the site and offers minimal to do on site for adults. Site is not great to walk around as many dead ends. We discovered a walk off the site on our second day (turn right down a quiet road and follow your nose! Takes you through a farm with horses then eventually onto the A37 (pavemented) back to the site in a circular. Not pleased with dog charge considering no dog facilities on site, no dog exercise area, dogs not allowed in complex. As in own accommodation so no cleaning required not sure what we were charged for?! No WiFi at pitches signal for EE ok. Showers were OK but one had broken seat and the other missing receptacle to put bottles. Shower head was so limescale little water came out. What water that did come out was hot.....eventually....push button about 11 times and it will come out. Birds galore - we love them!! but if you don't like bird squit all over your caravan and bird noise then avoid!

Liked: Stayed in a tent. Close to the facilities and play park. Lots to do on site for kids and adults. Also very close to the beach and the city if you prefer to do something else.

Disliked: Facilities could be checked and cleaned more often but I do blame people using it rather the cleaning team.

Local attractions

How to pick from the 30 or so castles close to Sundrum Castle Holiday Park? For sheer magnitude plus dramatic ocean views, try Culzean Castle, which sits in 600 acres a few miles south of Ayr. Those with kids in tow should head for Kelburn Castle, with its secret forest walkways, crocodile swamp, petting zoo and play barn; keen golfers meanwhile will appreciate the course at Rowallan Castle, which has an actual 19th hole (as well as the more traditional variety). Treat yourselves to a day at the races in nearby Ayr, also great for shopping and beaches, and home to Pirate Pete’s, where you’ll find Scotland’s biggest indoor play area, as well as outdoor rides, a laser zone and a cute traditional seafront café. Other popular day trips include a trip across the water to the stunning Isle of Arran; a pilgrimage to the Burns National Heritage Park to visit the Bard’s cottage and the neighbouring museum, and a cuddle-filled day out at the Heads of Ayr Farm Park.
