General

  • Working croft on a tiny car-free island
  • Firepit and barbecue area
  • Several spectacular beaches within easy reach

Cars driving you nuts? Want an old-style camping trip on a beaut and peaceful island? Retreat to the tiny Isle of Iona in the Inner Hebrides, an ancient isle full of history where kings were laid to rest, monks wandered in scholarly contemplation and which is still known today as a place of peace.

Cars are allowed for resident islanders only (if you’re driving, you can leave your car at the ferry port in Fionnphort), but it’s easy to get about under your own steam as the island is only three and a half miles long.

From the ferry, it’s a 20-minute walk to Isle of Iona Campsite on the west of the island, a working croft with first-rate views, roomy grass tent pitches and good facilities alongside its back to basics natural vibe: there are three toilets, two showers and firepit and barbecue area.

Foodwise, a Spar is on the island for picking up groceries, tipples and other essentials, with two hotels, a pub and a tearoom serving up meals and snacks.

Please note

No cars are allowed on the island.

The camp site was excellent, the location provides lots of shelter from the wind and the ground is very flat so easy to pitch on. The picnic benches were very useful and saved us from having to carry a small table and stools with us, as was the option to hire sleeping bags. The toilet block was very clean and adequate as was the kitchen wash up area. The owner of the site was very friendly and helpful. The island itself is stunning and full of history and wildlife.

Only campsite on the Island, allowing us to stay overnight and enjoy the evening there.

    Disliked:

Campsite was damp underfoot - no fault of the owner, but be prepared with a decent tent!

Only 2 showers/toilets - one shower did not work effectively (couldn't adjust temperature). Fact that toilet not separate from shower meant not being able to use toilet if both showers occupied. Microwave advertised and so we took appropriate food supplies but it was 'broken' when we arrived and we were told would be replaced next day - never saw a microwave in whole stay.

It was situated in quite a nice spot. There was a barbecue but we couldn't find the firepit. There was a shower block and a small kitchen area with a sofa, table and chairs, minimal storage space and a kettle. Good to have a shelter from the rain. We spoke to the owner on arrival who seemed nice and most of the guests were also quite friendly.

    Disliked:

The microwave was out-of-order as was one of the toilets, which was slightly annoying. The shower blocks were dirty and clogged up with hair. Some of the other guests were quite rowdy and stayed up all night partying. We couldn't find the firepit. It was at least a 20 minute walk to the campsite from the ferry.

Friendly, few people there during my stay, good facilities for the numbers (especially when the 3rd toilet gets fixed)
Not as midgy as expected - I pitched in open area with no problems with them. Other areas more sheltered still seemed not bad for the west coast.... hard decision: go for shelter and a few more midges or open land and more wind....

    Disliked:

Its 20 min walk to good beach or pub - but thats no surprise from the map!

Fabulous quiet site, plenty of space, good free hot showers. This place needs to be kept a secret as it hasn't been spoiled like others which feature in "great" campsite guides.

    Disliked:

There was a fridge as stated ... But it didn't work. My pitch was great but much of the lower site was very boggy - water shoes needed.

Local attractions

Take to your toes or hire a bike for a trip around Iona to see its well-known sights: Dun I, the highest point on Iona; Iona Abbey, founded by St Columba in the sixth century and used as a monastery until the Reformation; the medieval nunnery; stone Celtic crosses, and the burial monuments of kings including Mac Beth.

The heritage centre on the island is open from between the end of March and end of October for info on Iona history.

Iona has several gorgeous beaches on the island for sunbathing, rockpooling and spotting local otters and seabirds: the sheltered cove of Port Bàn; the North End beaches with their dunes and views across to Mull and Staffa, and St Columba’s Bay, where Columba is said to have landed from Ireland (and which is also known for its glittering green stones ‘Mermaid’s Tears’). Or tee off with a difference at Iona’s golf club with beachside views and bull wandering around the vegetation of the ninth hole.

Island hopping? Boat trips to other local islands such as Staffa and Lunga can be booked back at Fionnphort, or stay on Mull for the day to sample single malt whisky from Tobermory, catch a glimpse of a white-tailed or golden eagle or explore part of its 300 miles of coast.

Catch a ferry from Craignore port on Mull to Oban, home of another distillery and with ferry access to Coll, Tiree, Lismore, Barra and South Uist.
