Isle Of Iona Campsite: View over the pitches

General

  • Family-friendly site at a working croft on a tiny car-free island
  • Firepit and barbecue area
  • Five minutes' walk from the beach and several more within easy reach

Cars driving you nuts? Want an old-style camping trip on a pretty and peaceful island? Retreat to the tiny island of Iona in the Inner Hebrides – this is an ancient isle full of history where kings were laid to rest and monks wandered in scholarly contemplation, and which is still known today as a place of peace.

Cars are allowed for resident islanders only (if you’re driving, you can leave your car at the ferry port in Fionnphort), but it’s easy to get about under your own steam as the island is only three and a half miles long.

From the ferry, it’s a 20-minute walk to Isle of Iona Campsite on the west of the island, a working croft with first-rate views, roomy grass tent pitches and good facilities alongside its back-to-basics natural vibe: there are five toilets and five showers (in a smart washroom block opened for the 2021 season) plus a firepit and barbecue area.

Foodwise, a Spar is on the island for picking up groceries, tipples and other essentials, with two hotels, a pub and a tearoom serving up meals and snacks.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes are allowed on the island. All cars must be parked on the mainland.

Friendly and welcoming farming family. Arrived during lambing season, great fun to watch. Modern clinically clean facilities, with well equipped kitchen and stone barbeque in centre of site. Good position in centre of island, with good views. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets when weather good. Many level pitches.

    Disliked:

Can be windy with limited shelter - but nothing untypical for Iona.

Beautiful site with great views. There were only 2 other tents when I stayed so I had a great choice of pitches. Facilities are great. Kettle was fantastic as it was pretty cold so took my hot water bottle! Best thing was the very clean shower facilities though and the water was hot. Like actually hot, not just the average lukewarm temp that is standard in campsites! Highly recommend.

This campsite has set the bar very high in the standard of campsite to stay at. The glorious setting for this campsite also has a beautiful beach just a short walk away. Excellent facilities- lovely clean toilet and showers and a great kitchen with fridge, microwave and toaster. No vehicles allowed on Iona (only locals allowed cars) which made the stay extra peaceful and relaxing.
Made to feel very welcome by campsite owner.

the quietness, the views, Closeness to nature and wildness (a lot of campsites are not in 'natural' nature settings). The variety of the pitches. Friendly welcoming owners. Was no problem to deal with my blunder of booking the wrong week - still got to stay the week i meant. Being able to hear the surf through the night from my tent lulling me to sleep. The great sleeps i got there. Being surrounded by lambs.

The individual washrooms. The cleanliness. Near enough to walk easily to village shop .

    Reasonable price per night.

Loved the location on beautiful Iona. Lambs everywhere and just a few minutes walk from the beach. The facilities were kept so clean and had everything we needed and more - a kettle was a very welcome treat for our coffee in the mornings! Showers were great too. Zoe was very friendly but not intrusive. We can’t wait to come back.

The couple that owned site were very friendly and welcoming, it’s a very easy place to find as the islands pretty small, there were plenty of places pitch up and a few benches dotted about which is nice to have a place to sit and eat, the toilet/shower/ kitchen block was one of the cleanest and nicest facilities I’ve ever used, essentially what I’d describe as small on suit style rooms very nice along with a small kitchen area with a kettle and a microwave, and all for a very reasonable price

Local attractions

Take to your toes or hire a bike for a trip around Iona to see its well-known sights: Dun I, the highest point on Iona; Iona Abbey, founded by St Columba in the sixth century and used as a monastery until the Reformation; the medieval nunnery; stone Celtic crosses, and the burial monuments of kings including Mac Beth. The heritage centre on the island is open from between the end of March and end of October for info on Iona history.

Iona has several gorgeous beaches on the island for sunbathing, rockpooling and spotting local otters and seabirds: the sheltered cove of Port Bàn; the North End beaches with their dunes and views across to Mull and Staffa, and St Columba’s Bay, where Columba is said to have landed from Ireland (and which is also known for its glittering green stones ‘Mermaid’s Tears’). Or tee off with a difference at Iona’s golf club with beachside views and a bull wandering around the vegetation of the ninth hole.

Island hopping? Boat trips to other local islands such as Staffa and Lunga can be booked back at Fionnphort, or make for Mull for the day to sample single malt whisky from Tobermory, catch a glimpse of a white-tailed or golden eagle, or explore part of its 300 miles of coast.

Catch a ferry from Craignore port on Mull to Oban, home to another distillery and with ferry access to Coll, Tiree, Lismore, Barra and South Uist.
