  • Scenic site 10 minutes' drive from Oban, with views to Kerrera island
  • Ferries, whisky distillery and horse riding within 10 mins' drive
  • Play area and shop on site; dogs welcome
For some folk, Oban is a jumping-off point for trips to the spectacular Scottish islands; for others, it’s a very handy location simply for sinking into the gentle pace of rural Highlands life while still keeping convenient access to shops and other amenities. Whichever of those groups you fall into, a fine base awaits at Oban Holiday Park, a spacious and peaceful site in Gallanchmore, about 10 minutes’ drive south of the Oban. It’s a scenic spot indeed, with views out over the sea to the island of Kerrera (which you can take a closer look at by boarding a ferry less than a mile away). There are plenty more options for island hopping from the harbour in Oban, whether you’re doing a grand tour or just taking day trips. The town also has a good collection of shops, restaurants and things to do, including a cinema and golf course – not forgetting the option for a stroll along the seafront at sunset, watching the boats bobbing in the harbour. Staying here isn’t all about the islands, of course – there’s a whole heap of things to see on the mainland too, including castles, gardens and a whisky distillery. Activities are plentiful too, with pony trekking and scuba diving close by as well as a good choice of places to go for walks and bike rides. On site, all is nicely convenient too, with a small food shop, chemical disposal and modern toilets and showers; there’s also a play area where the kids can have a good run about. The site is supported by natural water springs, so you'll need to boil any water you intend to consume or drink bottled water instead.

What customers say

Great spot with wicked views near Oban. Staff are legends, always keen to help. Ablutions are clean, but a bit old-hat, especially the water and shower drainage. Sites can be a bit lopsided and hard to find, sometimes getting a bit rammed. Wi-Fi's a bit dodgy, mostly by the office.

Liked The campsite is in a lovely location and ideal for the ferry to Mull etc. The staff were friendly and we got a good pitch with a view of the sea through the lodges. The pitch was spacious and flat.

Disliked The facilities were not up to the standard of what we paid for the night. The toilet and shower blocks are tired and the men’s facilities in particular were poor.

The main factor for 3 stars though was, as mentioned by other reviews the water quality. We were notified on arrival of the need to boil water (and they said we had email notification of this…we hadn’t) but there is a difference between having not drinking water and having brown water. The signs around make this sound like a temporary issue but if that was the case why aren’t customers provided with some complementary bottles on arrival? I wouldn’t drink brown water even if it was boiled, I wasn’t going to give it to my dogs and I have just rewashed all my pots and pans at our next site as washing them in that water was not satisfactory. For the price we paid, not to have water that is usable is unacceptable.

You do have to wonder if the expensive lodges all around the park have the same water as I don’t think the hot tubs would look very appealing with a brown twinge…….!

Liked Nice walk within the campsite leading to a few highland cattle. Nice little playpark on site.

Disliked Pitches are pretty much a free for all. We booked electric for campervan/motorhome. Arrived late due to travel, no electric pitches were left. Pitches not mapped / marked out, very odd set up!

Liked Nothing about this site did we like which is hard to say but true for us

Disliked This site is only interested in its holiday homes and campers are a second thought. No fresh water all water comes from the hills and has to be boiled, NO WiFi, no laundry facilities (comment from warden- "the lodges have washing machines") well chuck that doesn't help the camper if needed. It was park up where every you like and as the evening progressed it was chaos as people were trying to find a spot and having to close camp to the next person's unit. Wardens and Team its not hard work to mark out pitches and also add to your map where the electric hook up points are as people including me had to walk your very steep site to find the points.
Bathroom facilities - Yuck! not clean, no privacy showers have no where to get undress and dressed as you have to exit the shower and dry and change in the main communal area - again it feels like an after thought. Too far out from Oben Taxi £10

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked - hilly around the campsite
- close to Oban
- little wind

Disliked - poor condition of the washrooms, toilets, and showers
- 1 shower for the campsite (1 for men, 1 for women)
- no drinking water available

We have experienced 5 campsites across the UK during our vacation. Here we evaluate 5 stars out of 10 because it has provided the least to what we have seen. In UK you can find better camps for even a little bit less money. Nevertheless, facilities are working and you get everything basic you need.

Local attractions

Getting out to see the surroundings? There are lots of lovely walks to be done nearby, or you can hire bikes in Oban (10 minutes’ drive) for scenic cycle rides. Achnalarig Riding Stables (10 minutes) is another option, for pony and horse riding lessons or treks – or you might like to see what’s out at sea by joining a scuba trip from Puffin Dive Centre (five minutes’ walk). Once you’ve viewed Kerrera from your pitch, head up the road (five minutes’ drive) to board a ferry over to the island – there’s a great seven-mile walking trail that runs from the harbour and will show you some of the island’s best bits. For other islands, it’s a 10-minute drive to Oban harbour, where services run to Lismore, Mull, Iona and Coll as well as more far-flung destinations. Back on the mainland, you may like to stop by at Dunstaffnage Castle (20 minutes), the Green Shoots garden (15 minutes) and Cruachan Dam Visitor Centre (35 minutes) – and don't forget a dram at Oban Distillery (10 minutes)…
