Ralegh's Cross Inn: Flat pitches

General

  • In the grounds of a country inn in Exmoor National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Watchet and 30 from Taunton and Minehead
  • Pub classics, evening specials and carvery night at the restaurant

Spectacular national park views, local eats and a traditional English country inn? If that’s ticking your boxes, scurry along to Ralegh's Cross Inn, an adults-only site 15 minutes’ drive from the Somerset coastal town of Watchet.

In the grounds of the Ralegh's Cross Inn, the site is – as one might imagine – exceptionally well placed when hunger strikes. It’s a short amble from pitches to the restaurant, where chefs cook up local ingredients for pub classics, light lunches, evening specials and (on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays) carvery spreads.

Of course, there’s more to travel than the food, and the site’s in a top spot for adventures beyond tickling taste buds too. Just inside the south eastern edge of Exmoor National Park, it’s well suited to energetic explorers who are keen to venture out on hikes and bikes, and there’s bike rental available 35 minutes away.

For hols spent by the sea, it’s an easy 15 minutes to the nearest (pebble) beach in Watchet, and half an hour to the sands of Minehead. Once everyone tires of splashing about, a return to site should prove calming: soak up views towards Dunkery Beacon (Exmoor’s highest point), Bristol Channel and the Welsh hills.

Great sized pitches & good pub grub24/05/2022

Checked in at the pub on arrival & told to choose any pitch. Large grass pitches with enough room for awnings, cars, trailers etc. Didn’t use the shower/toilet block so can’t comment. Friendly, helpful staff in the pub & good food. All you can eat breakfast served in the pub from 0900hrs for £9.95 - great value for money.

    Disliked:

Slightly sloping pitch so needed to use ramps. On Pitch Up booking form there is an additional information box, so I asked for a table for supper in the pub however the staff in the pub don’t see this so there wasn’t a table booked, however they fitted us anyway.
Pitch Up states that the max size for a camper van/Motorhome is 6m long - the pitches are massive & there is no no restriction on size of unit.

Large site, with plenty of space for the dog

    Disliked:

No-one to greet us and tell us where to pitch. Lady behind the bar told us just to pitch up in field 1 and asked us if we had paid. Pitches not very level, plus the portaloo and showers were dirty and had not been cleaned. Newer toilets we found on the morning we were leaving were much better, but no showers there.

Pub was lovely, great food & friendly staff.

    Disliked:

People obviously living on the site and not keeping their pitch/area in the slightest bit tidy & allowing their massive dog to roam the site unattended.
Loud music from x2 pitches until gone mid night.
Looks like a building site/scrap yard.
Old tables/chairs & car parts shoved in the hedge.
    Broken fences.
    No sign of site manager.
New toilets to rear of pub but if you want a shower then you have to go to the original toilet/shower block which is an old porta cabin & no longer fit for purpose.
Area to empty your toilet in a complete state filled with leaves so very easy to sort.
Hut with sink to do your washing up but no water connected.
Some jobs started but very obviously just left for months & not finished. Such a shame

Local attractions

Make the most of Exmoor stays by signing up immediately for an Exmoor Wildlife Safari, clambering into the back of a Land Rover for guided excursions through the park, keeping eyes peeled for deer and the rare Exmoor ponies. There are no long treks to get going either, as the tour guides will pick guests up at Dunster, Dulverton or Exford, all within about 25 minutes’ drive.

Get a closer look at some of the area’s wildlife (as well as some more exotic specimens) at Tropiquaria, a small Art Deco zoo in a former BBC radio transmitter station 10 minutes from base, or travel a little further (30 minutes) to the Exmoor Pony Centre to learn about the native ponies and even take a ride in the park.

If interest in watery getaways was piqued by beach days in Minehead and Watchet, but less salt would be preferable, head along to Wimbleball Lake or Clatworthy Reservoir (both within 15 minutes) – the first for birdwatching, trout fishing and lessons in windsurfing, sailing, canoeing and rowing, and the second for pretty scenery, boat hire and fishing.

Dip a toe into the past by visiting the Museum of Somerset and the military and cricket museums in Taunton, half an hour away, then dive further in with trips to Dunster Castle, Fyne Court and Knightshayes, all within 35 minutes of base. Prefer to finish hols on a celebratory note? Stumble over to Yearlstone Vineyard (40 minutes) for a tipple or two.

Must see

  • Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (22.8 kilometres)
  • The National Trust Killerton House & Gardens (34.9 kilometres)
  • St Fagans: National History Museum (43.4 kilometres)

National Trust
