Stunning sunset view enjoyed by a camper during june.

  • Peaceful site in Exmoor’s Porlock Vale, for guests aged 16 and over
  • Around three miles from Minehead or the village of Porlock
  • In a farmed meadow on the National Trust's Holnicote Estate
Due for some relaxation? Take yourself away to this peaceful spot in a gorgeous, spacious nine-acre farmland meadow at Porlock Vale Campsite on Holt Ball Farm, which is on the National Trust’s Holnicote Estate in Exmoor National Park. There are spectacular views towards North Hill, Selworthy Forest, Hurlstone Point and Grabbist. Behind the field rises the splendid Dunkery Commons moorland, which is easily accessible via the bridleway just through the farm driveway, which leads up to Robin Howe, Webber’s Post and Dunkery Beacon. A green and sustainable site, Porlock Vale Campsite is conveniently positioned for exploring the surrounding Exmoor countryside, moorlands, woodlands and coast too. This includes Bossington Beach (10 minutes’ drive) and Porlock Weir (15 minutes). Impressive oak trees add to the pretty landscape and peace and quiet. A myriad of wildlife can be spotted, including buzzards, foxes, hares, rabbits, beavers and water voles - and if you’re lucky enough, you may see wild red deer passing through. The National Trust is progressing rewilding and land recovery projects in the area, making it a particularly interesting spot for folks who are interested in the environment, biodiversity, climate change and how farming is being adapted to benefit nature. The site’s theme of peace and tranquillity respects the abundance of wildlife and farm animals living here, which is why there is no amplified music or loud noise and quiet hours after 10pm. Recycling and rubbish bins are provided so that guests can leave no trace, as the field reverts back to its gorgeous natural state at the end of the season.

What customers say

Gorgeous, tranquil spot with great views & space. Dawn's a legend – super friendly! Facilities are spotless, off-grid, with hot showers and proper loos. Perfect for hikers & nature buffs, straight onto the trails. A bit sloped and queues can happen, but most rave and wanna come back.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked We have been to Porlock Vale three times now. Twice this year.. last time at end of September.
This is such a lovely site. Peaceful, calm, scenic and run by a lovely person.
Dawn is very friendly and helpful and we love Rosie who always seems to be waiting to greet us.
The site is well run with clean toilets and hot showers. A big washing up area with two sinks and lots of information about surrounding areas. Although there is no electricity on site, Dawn has lots of solar lights… in the barn/washing up area, showers and toilets.
We love the wild grass areas in the field which encourage lots of insects and birds and has been great to watch the changing colours.
Lots of walking from the site or just sitting in peace and quiet.
This is a special site so please treat it with the respect it deserves and enjoy 😊

Unpowered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked What an incredible find this was! We loved our stay at Porlock Vale campsite. The setting and views were absolutely stunning and there are a variety of accessible walks in all directions, from fields and lanes to forests and moorland. This campsite is a really peaceful haven with lots of space to pitch.

The herd of Exmoor ponies were lovely to watch on the hills and it was great to learn more about the Exmoor Pony Project through Dawn, who together with her dogs Rosie and Mia, was so very welcoming and helpful.

The campsite is very natural but still has good facilities. There is a real effort to support the natural world.

All in all highly recommended and we will definitely come back here.

(Small note to bring chocks for your campervan if you want to take advantage of the best views at the top of the field as there is a little slope.)

Unpowered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Absolutely loved this site! Fantastic views, and walks from the site, very well kept. Perfect for reaching Exmoor by foot. Couldn't have wished for better. Dawn was so friendly and informative, We chatted a lot. A true horse lover and what an amazing herd of Exmoor ponies she has. A credit to her. She has put her heart into this farm. And it shows.
Thank you Dawn, for making our stay so warm and friendly. We will be back without doubt. And thank you for signing my books!
Best wishes,
Janice and Scott.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked We stayed at Porlock Vale for three nights in September, and had a lovely time. The campsite was so peaceful and picturesque, with views of the sea and the Exmoor ponies, and sights and sounds of the local birds. The campsite had all the amenities we needed for our stay, including a fire pit to rent. On our arrival we were greeted by Rosie, Dawn’s dog on the first day who was a delight. Dawn was an excellent host, brilliant communication before and whilst we were there. We were lucky to hear all about her work with her ponies, which made the stay even more special. We will definitely be back again.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked We absolutely loved our stay - me, my partner and our dog. So much room, beautiful views and a field next door for Reggie to run in. Washing up facilities and loos were kept spotless, and Dawn delivered a fire pit and wood as soon as we asked. It was a proper break from "real life" - would absolutely recommend.

Unpowered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Peaceful, beautiful setting. Great access to loads of footpaths from the campsite for good walking. Short drive to coastal path walks.

Disliked There isn't a lot of flat ground at the site, but the gentle slope is fine for a tent and can be overcome with the use of chocks on a van.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your lovely review and glad you enjoyed the beautiful local walking. There are plenty of flat spots to pitch around the field - and just 15 pitches in 9 acres so plenty of choice too. Hope to see you both again.

Local attractions

The campsite shares the farm with the Exmoor Pony Project, a locally run initiative to breed, care for and encourage better understanding of Exmoor's rare native ponies. All the animals are housed in excellent conditions, and you can come and admire them looking their best as they trot between their barns, corrals and paddocks. Five minutes' drive away from site, the picture-postcard village of Selworthy has spectacular views over the local countryside, plus a tea room where you can fill up on freshly baked cake. For access to the sea, there's Bossington beach (10 minutes' drive), a pebble-based spot owned by the National Trust with pretty views over the Exmoor Hills, or you could take the scenic drive through forests and moors to Lynton and Lynmouth (30 minutes) for fish and chips on the quay and surfing in the spray. Exmoor is one of those fabulous places that has both countryside and coast to explore, so walkers and cyclists have a plethora of scenery to enjoy on their jaunts here. The South West Coast Path is one of the main draws, of course – you could fill many a day covering several different sections – while inland highlights include Dunkery Beacon (three miles away) and Tarr Steps (half an hour’s drive).
