Purbeck Glamping: Great views and plenty of space

General

  • Dorset glamping close to the Isle of Purbeck
  • On the edge of Winfrith Newburgh; West Lulworth 10 minutes' drive
  • Street food three times a week in August

Go on, roll up to this Dorset location and pitch up in a style… putting down roots at Purbeck Glamping for a while will open up a whole load of dreamy Dorset locations, including castles, harbours, beaches and countryside.

What’s the set-up like? The place is a quiet bell tent site on the edge of the village of Winfrith Newburgh. That means that you’ll be settling down in a well-kept rural landscape. It’s also just the place to try out local street food and get out to the beaches and cliffs of the Jurassic Coast 10 minutes’ drive away.

These spacious five-metre tents come with a double bed and two singles and have access to well-maintained shared toilets and showers. Since they’re based in a quiet location close to the village centre, they’re just half a mile from the handy village shop and close to lots of public rights of way for Dorset wanders. The South West Coast Path is also within easy reach and can be joined around three miles to the south of Purbeck Glamping.

Firepits are available to hire on site, with street food available three times a week throughout August if you'd rather leave the slicing and dicing to someone else. Other popular dining options in the local area include a pub a mile away to the north or West Lulworth (10 minutes' drive), where there are restaurants, coffee shops and ice cream stands.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Units longer than 6 metres are not allowed.

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.

Had an enjoyable stay at Purbeck Glamping, which was a new venture for July and August on a sheep farm in Dorset. Everyone who worked there was lovely and helpful. The 25 Bell Tents erected at the top of the field were great.
If you're bothered about spiders remember you're in a field, there's a fair few that get in the tent - take a spider grabber or a mug to catch them in !
We received a bottle of Fizz on arrival which was a nice touch. I booked a firepit for our 6 night stay, it does get cool and breezy on an evening, and I would def. recommend getting one. Once you'd paid you got as much wood as you liked, and kindling and firelighters from the welcome tent. I usually picked our up in the morning after my shower in case we ate out and were back once they'd had shut for the evening.
The toilets and showers were generally clean, just depended what time you used them - they were immaculate early in the morning, but tended to need a sweep out later due to grass that got walked in. They were cleaned regularly on the whole.
It was great that dogs could stay on site in the Bell Tents. This site was the only site we could find that accepted dogs in their tents when we booked ( it was our first time and we don't own a tent, but wanted to visit Dorset with our dog ).
Coffee/Tea was available from the Welcome Tent when the Coffee Van wasn't there (drinks from the van were to be purchased). Other items like ice creams could be purchased from the Welcome Tent.
We received a laminated welcome pack on arrival with all the local places on it.
We took our own bottom sheets to put on the mattress, plus a sleeping bag each and pillow, and a throw over the sleeping bags - it got pretty cool at night, and I would say that was about right. We didn't hire any bedding as we had our own.
Great location for getting around many local places such as the Tank Museum, Monkey World, RSPB Arne nature reserve, Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, village of Tyneham etc !

    Disliked:

We felt that whilst the ''street food'' offered on site some nights was handy, it was somewhat overpriced. Captive market I suppose ! We ate there the first night and ate out after that all except one breakfast bun we had for a change. We felt if it had been less costly we would have used this facility more. There are plenty of dog friendly pubs that do food locally and a Fish & Chips van just 2 mins drive away instead.
Whilst there was a local farm shop you could walk to, we would have found it easier to have been able to purchase milk from the Welcome Tent for coffee/cereal. Even with a cool box and swapping the cool blocks over we couldn't have kept milk cool all day ! ( you could chill down your cool blocks in their freezer)

As the field is on a hill, this site is def not for anyone who has mobility problems, as the Welcome Tent is at the bottom of the field/hill and the tents up at the top by a line of large trees. Also, showers and toilets were the drive-on variety, and had 3 steps to climb to access. I have some mobility problems and just about managed - but I would say judge for yourself before booking.

Bell tent was lovely and clean, enough room for a double bed, 2 singles and a blow up mattress on the floor. Toilets and showers nice and clean, with hot water on tap 24 hrs. Great views and lovely atmosphere.
We took our dog who loved to sit outside on her long lead and watch everyone come by, and for 2 teenagers- good signal and free charging points down at the reception marquee!
Couldn’t fault it and we are a family that usually do 5 star all inclusive!! We will definitely come again.

Local attractions

Pretend like you’re living in the old days by climbing to the ruins at Corfe Castle (20 minutes’ drive) or looking around the rose garden at Lulworth Castle (10 minutes). You’ll get to live out a 17th-century fantasy at the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy (30 minutes) too, a country house with huge formal gardens.

When it comes to natural beauty, there’s an excellent selection of locations around too. Dancing Ledge (30 minutes) requires a short scramble to get there, but the rocky ledge is frequented by cliff jumpers and those who want a dip in the little tidal pool. West Lulworth (10 minutes) is the gateway to Lulworth Cove, Fossil Forest and Durdle Door too.

If it’s wildlife you’re wanting to scope out, Abbotsbury Swannery (30 minutes) is home to a colony of nesting swans. See what fish you recognise in the tunnels through the Sea Life Centre Weymouth (20 minutes) too. Another chance to work on your wildlife spotting skills is with a boat trip to Brownsea Island from Poole Harbour (30 minutes).

Must see

  • The Tank Museum (4.8 kilometres)
  • Lulworth Heritage Centre (4.9 kilometres)
