  • Friendly, spacious back-to-basics site in rural west Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive from Bridport and 20 from Lyme Regis
  • Eco-friendly site with an orchard, tyre swing and garden toys
Not a fan of being packed in with hundreds of other guests? Pilsdon View Camping owners Terry and April are in full agreement with this point of view – they’ve got seven acres to play with here, but they like to keep numbers low to make sure there’s plenty of space for ball games, barbecues, campfires and stargazing (all essential aspects of a trip to the countryside, they suggest…) That approach and the mighty friendly welcome on offer have earned a huge stack of rave reviews for this rural Dorset site 10 minutes’ drive from Bridport. And there are plaudits for the location too, in a scenic spot with the river Char running alongside and easy access to several footpaths and bike tracks for rural explores. The owners are doing their level best to preserve that special environment, giving over part of the site to an orchard and growing lots of their own herbs and veggies in the garden (and asking dog owners to keep their furry pals on a lead so they don’t rampage through any of the above and clean up any doings). Kids can roam fairly freely around this site, playing with the garden toys and tyre swing or setting up their own games; don’t worry about them getting mucky, as there are gas-powered showers to take care of clean-up time. Toilets, a fresh water supply and a washing-up area are also in place close to the pitches field. Mobile phone and device charging is available for a small fee. Please note that as this is a family site, guests are expected to fall quiet after dark (no amplified music or other noise nuisance will be allowed).

Bell tent

Liked Gorgeous countryside and lots of space for the kids to play. April and Terry are considerate and approachable; the campsite feels very loved and safe. Having a good van on the site was really handy and the showers were wonderful. They also have a fossil display table so you can peruse the treasures previous campers have found and left.

Disliked Nothing - there were no negative parts to this trip.

Family yurt

Liked There was such a warm welcome and the site is really well thought out with bikes and games for the kids.
The yurt was cosy and well equipped for everything we needed.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay in the yurt. They are a lovely space and the wool insulation means they stay a more even temperature and are quieter than a regular tent.

Disliked Unfortunately a bit of noise, but it was a crying baby so absolutely nothing to do with the site, who kindly moved us to make it lessen the noise.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Very friendly and attentive staff who gave us a bag of marshmallows as a welcome gift! They even offered car help when we were having issues. We went midweek and it was quiet. Very family friendly. Facilities were wonderfully kept, clean and well spread out.

From the manager: Thank you very much for your visit and review. We keep the jump leads handy and they usually get deployed 3 or 4 times per season.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Super warm welcome, lovely team. Able to choose our spot. Flat surface to pitch our tent. Warm showers and clean amenities all around. Nothing fancy, just perfect. Food truck was convenient after a long day. No light pollution, star gazing was an exceptional treat if you fancy waking up at 1am!
+++ blackberry bush right by our tent!

Disliked Near roads. We could hear the farm trucks and cars (and the sheep and birds :) ) early in the morning but that didn’t bother us one bit. Also, earplugs are a thing!

Bell tent

Liked Second visit to this beautiful site. Terry and April are amazing and always there to help and provide any assistance or suggestions for the local area.

We were a party of around 14 including several small children who thoroughly enjoyed the campsite. It was helpful bring a small personal site with toys and park for the children to use.

Facilities are exceptionally clean and were monitored by staff on a regular basis.

We look forward to returning again. Thank you April, Terry and staff. Best wishes Lucy & Family.

From the manager: We really enjoy hosting family groups. With the yurts and bell tents ready pitched for you, or the choice to bring your own tent or van, families can create their own ‘village’. The kids bikes and unicorns get a lot of use! Thank you very much for your visit and review.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked The greetings from the team upon arrival. Excellent explained all where to go etc, told to drive around and pick a spot, told us the best places for a sunset or sunrise.
The loos, but showers are more adequate for the site, with plenty of them.
Jurassic Pork was a nice touch to have icecream or some breakfast or dinner when during opening hours and buying milk if needed
The sky at night was amazing, toilets never seen so many stars with no light pollution it was amazing to site outside and have a coffee and just look up.

Disliked Only stayed 1 night, so nothing to dislike.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for coming to visit. Jurassic Pork is a great partner business and make lovely chips!
We also enjoy the view of stars in the night sky.

Local attractions

Might you have seen the cliffs of West Bay before? It’s quite possible if you ever watched Broadchurch, as they played something of a starring role in the telly series. They’re even better viewed in real life though, so it’s worth making the 15-minute drive to see them for yourself. Lyme Regis (20 minutes’ drive) is another fine choice for a day by the sea – mackerel fishing trips head out from the harbour, and there may well be fossils lurking on the beach (and if there aren’t any presenting themselves, you can see what other folk have found at the town’s Dinosaurland Museum). In fact, pretty much the whole stretch of coast here is worth a visit, so strolls on the South West Coast Path are highly recommended. The scenery extends under the surface too, with the 2,000-year-old Beer Quarry Caves (35 minutes) certainly meriting a detour. Away from the coast, Mapperton House and Gardens is within 20 minutes’ drive, as are a couple of vineyards and cider producers for guests of a particular vintage.
