  • Friendly, spacious back-to-basics site in rural west Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive from Bridport and 20 from Lyme Regis
  • Eco-friendly site with an orchard, tyre swing and garden toys
Not a fan of being packed in with hundreds of other guests? Pilsdon View Camping owners Terry and April are in full agreement with this point of view – they’ve got seven acres to play with here, but they like to keep numbers low to make sure there’s plenty of space for ball games, barbecues, campfires and stargazing (all essential aspects of a trip to the countryside, they suggest…) That approach and the mighty friendly welcome on offer have earned a huge stack of rave reviews for this rural Dorset site 10 minutes’ drive from Bridport. And there are plaudits for the location too, in a scenic spot with the river Char running alongside and easy access to several footpaths and bike tracks for rural explores. The owners are doing their level best to preserve that special environment, giving over part of the site to an orchard and growing lots of their own herbs and veggies in the garden (and asking dog owners to keep their furry pals on a lead so they don’t rampage through any of the above and clean up any doings). Kids can roam fairly freely around this site, playing with the garden toys and tyre swing or setting up their own games; don’t worry about them getting mucky, as there are gas-powered showers to take care of clean-up time. Toilets, a fresh water supply and a washing-up area are also in place close to the pitches field. Mobile phone and device charging is available for a small fee. Please note that as this is a family site, guests are expected to fall quiet after dark (no amplified music or other noise nuisance will be allowed).

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Very clean and spacious. Warm welcome on arrival. Facilities were clean and showers warm. The food truck was a lovely perk and staff were really sweet with our one year old. Campsite was generally quiet from about 9pm.

From the manager: Many thanks for your visit and for taking the time to write this lovely review for us. It’s so great to see little ones getting fresh air and freedom, and their enthusiasm for the tractor is great.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked April and Terry were so welcoming and so helpful. Nothing was too much for them.
The site itself has everything you need. It's very spacious, hot showers, toilets close by, fresh water available. The children loved the tyre swing and were so pleased to find a park tucked away on site too. We especially loved how although the site got busy, it never felt busy. Everyone's tents were spaced out nicely with huge spaces in front for ball games and whatever else. We were able to use a fire pit without a charge and everyday a tractor would come round with firewood for us to purchase at a small cost and they threw in kindling and paper for free too! Lots of bikes and other toys for the children to help themselves to to play with. The children made signs for the water stations and the next day April had laminated them ready to put them up. Super friendly. The food van on site was great too. Jurassic Pork. Everyone was so friendly and we will definitely be back!

Disliked There's nothing to dislike.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Nice large grass pitches, 2 clean hot showers what I seen, nice clean toilet block.

lovely hot take away food from jurassic pork and hot and cold drinks.

The kids loved the tire tree swing.

Disliked The welcome was pleasent from April the owner, but didnt feel so welcome from Terry her husband because our dog jumped out of the car after a long journey.

Terry is like the site warden stick to the rules especially if you have a dog, keep it on a lead he gave my wife a good telling off.

The dog area as a gap under the gate a dog can escape under it, my collie got under it and ran back to our tent when my son took him for a walk.

Why is there not a dog poo bin in the dog walk area? you have to walk to the bins area just to put dog poo in the bin.

There is not enough showers on site two in a middle of a field in a wooden shed the left one was allways cold. One in another next to a eco loo you have put some sort of soil in when you finish. I did not see the others at the other end of site if any might have been one or two there in another shed.

Sheep in opposite field did make alot of noise in the early mornings by the river field ( stream ) thats deep bankings not accesable.

Very much doubt we will stay here again.

From the manager: We are sorry that you didn’t enjoy your stay and were unhappy about various aspects of your stay. We are a dog-friendly campsite, providing water bowls by reception and the toilet block. We also have about 1/3 acre dog walking area, where dogs can be off lead to run and play. Unfortunately in the past we have had issues with some poorly controlled dogs which have bitten and frightened guests. This is why we do enforce the rule that dogs must be kept on a lead or tether outside the dog walking area.
We have considered placing a dog poo bin in the dog walking area, but we are concerned that it might be misused, dog faeces is toxic and can carry disease, so we have made the decision to keep all the bins together.
We have a total of five showers which is usually more than adequate for the number of guests. We rarely see queues building up, and they are cleaned thoroughly every day. During your stay, one of the showers did run cold due to a fault, and as soon as this was brought to our attention Terry repaired it so it would run hot again. If any of our guests encounter a problem we ask them to come and talk to us in the first instance.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Greeting, facilities, cleanliness, vibe. We have been here for 4 times now and our children love it. Would recommend!!

Disliked Being told we could have a certain shady spot by the river but upon arrival it was taken by a friend of theirs/ someone working there. Bit disappointing and seems that all the nicer pitches are taken up this way.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for your visit. I hope the birthday girl had a wonderful time. We did our best to accommodate your request “Please can we mark out the pitch next to the river that is closest to the play area & yurt please and we will be a group but booking separately. Many thanks, ” by pitching the bell tent next to the river so that you could all pitch close together. It wasn’t clear that you actually wanted to be right in the corner, and that situation had already been occupied. We have a policy not to reserve particular places as we prefer our guests to have choice over where they pitch when they arrive.

Local attractions

Might you have seen the cliffs of West Bay before? It’s quite possible if you ever watched Broadchurch, as they played something of a starring role in the telly series. They’re even better viewed in real life though, so it’s worth making the 15-minute drive to see them for yourself. Lyme Regis (20 minutes’ drive) is another fine choice for a day by the sea – mackerel fishing trips head out from the harbour, and there may well be fossils lurking on the beach (and if there aren’t any presenting themselves, you can see what other folk have found at the town’s Dinosaurland Museum). In fact, pretty much the whole stretch of coast here is worth a visit, so strolls on the South West Coast Path are highly recommended. The scenery extends under the surface too, with the 2,000-year-old Beer Quarry Caves (35 minutes) certainly meriting a detour. Away from the coast, Mapperton House and Gardens is within 20 minutes’ drive, as are a couple of vineyards and cider producers for guests of a particular vintage.
