  • Welcoming site on an alpaca farm in south Devon
  • Totnes five minutes’ drive; Dartmoor and South Hams beaches 20 minutes
  • Alpaca treks and cream teas available; five minutes’ walk to the pub
If you’ve always longed to get close to alpacas, here’s your chance. The animals at Gatcombe Park Farm Glamping, in the South Hams village of Littlehempston, are as friendly as they come, and most of them will come and say hello. If you really want to get to know them, you can book an alpaca trek on arrival (for an extra charge), before rounding off a splendid day with a Devon cream tea back at base. The adults-only accommodation options at Gatcombe Park Farm Glamping are a short walk away from a landscaped pond, where you're welcome to chill out with a drink and watch the alpacas grazing peacefully in neighbouring paddocks. The site is located in a pretty village location, within five minutes’ walking distance of two pubs (one in the village and the other a little further away through the lanes and woodland), while Totnes (five minutes’ drive) has a choice of cafés, pubs and restaurants as well as all the shops you need to keep stocked up on essential supplies.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Lovely little site, as calm and quiet as advertised. The area was beautiful, plenty of nice walks and places to visit - Compton Castle and Berry Pomeroy are a short drive away. Two lovely pubs within walking distance. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be going back.

Showman’s shepherd's hut

Liked: This was booked through pitch-up.com and was easy to use. The contact with the owners leading up to the trip was great, as was the welcome when we arrived. As non-drivers it was tricky to find our way from Totnes but that was our fault and there are easy bus links and a walk (which we eventually found). We'd booked the airstreamer and it was warm and well looked after. There was great facilities inside as well as an outside shower and toilet block. Perfect for our needs. The weather wasn't perfect but on one of the clear nights the stars were beautiful and well worth staying up to observe. There's great links to Totnes and Paignton with a bus ride which is easy to get to (although there is a very busy road). Through the website we'd booked an alpaca walk and this was a highlight of the trip. We spent an hour with the animals walking around the fields and through as copse of trees. The owner was lovely and chatty and it was an experience to remember.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Good location, just a few minutes drive from Totnes and within easy reach of many coastal and moor destinations. Welcoming and friendly site, both quirky (being a farm with Alpacas, Peacocks, Geese, hens etc) and quiet. Good facilities for campers and glampers. Owners based on site and very warm and helpful. They clearly are enthusiastic and driven to make this site the success it is. We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 night stay and would recommend it to all. Thanks Phil and partner (sorry can't recall name)....as well as Toby and Sam for a fabulous time. All the best for the future and we hope to stay again next time we are in the area.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Fantastic facilities including clean, no frills outdoor shower/WC and large main bathroom if you're feeling luxurious. Little kitchen area was a nice addition, especially if the weather is too poor for cooking outside. The hosts are lovely and friendly (especially Toby the dog) whilst not being overbearing or intrusive. The paddock is perfect for camping, with beautiful views and fuzzy alpacas to keep you entertained. Alpaca watching is best enjoyed sat by the pond in the evenings with a glass of wine. Perfect stay with nothing that could have improved it, even with the torrential downpours that we had.

Local attractions

Once you’ve managed to drag yourselves away from the alpacas, get the walking shoes on and explore the many footpaths accessed from site. For more serious yomps across moorland to rocky tors, head to Dartmoor National Park (20 minutes’ drive to Buckfastleigh), where you can also spot wild ponies roaming free. Alternatively, turn east to the Devon coast. Paignton (20 minutes) has a sandy beach, a promenade and traditional pier, and if you’re after something more secluded, St Mary’s Bay is an often-almost deserted cove reached by steps down the cliffside. From there, you can walk to the landmark Berry Head Lighthouse in Berry Head National Nature Reserve (20 minutes’ walk). The high street in historic Totnes (five minutes’ drive) is full of small independent shops and art galleries, but the town is at its liveliest on Friday and Sunday, when street markets offer local foods and ciders, artisan crafts and antiques. Dartmouth (half an hour) has a lively waterfront and watersports along the River Dart, and sailing-mad Salcombe (40 minutes) has spectacular views of the Kingsbridge estuary. Brixham (25 minutes) is known for its lively fishing harbour and choice of seafood restaurants.
